I am a patient of manic bipolar disorder for the last 20 yrs. I am ok and recently retired from services. My doctor says I have to take medication livelong. I know that only to protect me from depression, I need medicines. But the side effects of these medicines caused me a great health concerns like problem of high BP, kidney cyst, fatty liver, ischemia, bronchial asthma (w.e.f 1985) etc. I sincerely hope your kind advice / suggestions reg my health and medications. Sir among all the drugs that are used for bipolar disorder Lithium has the least side effect. It is not metabolized in liver. None of the side effects mentioned by can be attributed only to Lithium. It does have a effect on kidney, but taking adequate water eliminates the problems.
