My friend is 48 yrs old extremely intelligent and successful business man. He always had the habit of worrying too much. Lately he started hearing voices. He went to ENT and was told he is suffering from SCHIZOPHRENIA. He is absolutely normal a. Earlier he was a very optimistic person nowadays he has become pessimistic. This is the only apparent change in him. Can his situation worsen if untreated. What is the course of action to be taken. As a friend how can I support him.

Your friend appears to be having psychosis and he needs a detailed psychiatric evaluation. Schizophrenia is a possibility, but other disorders which may cause hearing of voices (hallucinations) need to be assessed as well. During this period, it is very important to give him a good patient listening, a family member/close friend should accompany him to a psychiatrist for evaluation asap and we should ensure that he takes treatment (medicines and counselling) regularly and someone should be with him most of the time for the first 2-3 weeks.
