Minimum 1 mm thickness of composite is required to provide strength. Smaller than this will be fracture prone. Life of composite depends on many factors like quality of material used, dentist's handling skills/ expertise, location of filling in a tooth and position of tooth in the oral cavity etc. If everything is favorable in your case, a composite filling may lasts years even in some for life time.

It depends what is the condition of the teeth. In a traumatic tooth. If it's broken to half we usually. Make slight bevel in the surface of enamel or dentin and do the build up. And if you are wanting to do cosmetic correction of teeth and want veneers. Then.the whole tooth surface on the outer side is prepared. With a bevel on the lingual side so as to hold the material on the tooth.
