I am a professor in the dept of soil and water engineering, to years back on 17 sept 2013 i suffered from a disc prolapse l5s1, i took 45 days of bed rest, some doctors advised to go for surgery, while others cautioned me to continue with changed life style, once in while i do take pain relievers, there is numbness in the left heel and outer shoe line and two of the toes, i used to go by bicycle all these years form 1987, now i am using auto-drive car, do suggest me any exercise/ methods so that i can gain strength of the back and do physical work.

Hello, this type of sensation and numbness is due to compression of your spinal cord. If you can, send me all the investigation reports, it will help me to explain you the type exercises. Till then follow these advise - 1. You have to maintain correct posture with protracted shoulder, sit properly with back rest on the pillow, walk straight with your shoulder protracted. 2. While lying down on your bed, keep pillow under your knees. 3. While side lying, keep pillow between the knees. 4. Have balanced diet which is rich in calcium. 5. Drink lots of water, it will keep supple your joints. 6. Morning walk and sunbath is must for at least 15-20 mins. 7. I recommend back flexion exercises like knee to chest, straight leg raising, static abdominal exercises etc. 8. Active and passive hamstrings and quadriceps muscles stretching may helpful for you.
