Parents also worry that their babies are not pooping enough. A baby eating formula usually has a bowel movement at least once most days, but may go 1 to 2 days between bowel movements. For breastfed infants it depends on age. During the first month of life, stooling less than once a day might mean your newborn isn’t eating enough. However, breastfed infants may go several days or even a week between bowel movements, using every drop they eat to make more baby, not poop. If you think your baby is constipated, you can try giving him or her a little apple or pear juice. You may give 1 ounce a day for every month of life up to about 4 months (a 3-month-old baby would get 3 ounces).

Don't worry. Breastfed babies may pass seven eight times stools per day or once in four five days. Both are normal if child is playful, active and putting on weight. When child does not pass stool daily, she should pass gas daily, so that we know it's not obstruction and doesn't need any treatment. Obstruction requires immediate medical attention. Constipated stools will be hard and will cause pain while passing where as normal stools passed after four five days will be soft and will have normal consistency.
