Myths and Facts About Donating Blood

Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS), MS, MBBS
General Surgeon, Bangalore
Myths and Facts About Donating Blood

When you give some of your blood for someone else, it is called blood donation. It usually helps people who have lost quite a bit of blood in accidents or suffer from diseases, such as cancer or hemophilia, etc.

Like all activities related to medical conditions, there are myths related to blood donation too and some of them are:

1. Myth: Because you're a vegetarian, you don't have enough iron in your blood; so your blood isn't useful as donated blood.
Fact: The fact is that vegetarians can donate blood and their blood has enough iron, just as much as non vegetarians.

2. Myth: Infections, such as HIV can be contracted from donating blood.
Fact: This does not have a practical basis except for the fact that using contaminated needles might lead to contraction of the infections. However, usually fresh needles are used; therefore this never happens much.

3. Myth: Your health can deteriorate after you donate blood.
Fact: Your body produces new red blood cells as well as white blood cells after donation; hence your health doesn't deteriorate at all, except in cases where there is no rest taken at all after donation.

4. Myth: If you take medications, you cannot donate blood.
Fact: This is entirely dependent on your physician's advice. In case of some medications, you need to halt them in order to donate blood. In most cases though, taking medications does not prevent you from donating blood.

5. Myth: You will be unable to partake in physical activities after donating blood.
Fact: Heavy lifting should be avoided. Apart from this, donating blood does not stop you from physical activities. You need to rest for a while, but there is nothing about blood donation putting a check on most physical activities.

6.Myth: People with more weight have more blood to donate.
Fact: This is an entirely baseless assumption. Overweight or obese people are often unhealthy, so donating more blood has nothing to do with weight. Hence, obese people do not have more blood in their bodies as compared to their thinner counterparts.

Dyslexia - 10 Signs Your Child Maybe Suffering From It!

Dyslexia - 10 Signs Your Child Maybe Suffering From It!

All parents expect their child to start going to school, learn writing and learning and do well in academics. However, children with dyslexia may not be able to progress at school at the same pace as others. The good news is that there are early pointers that can help a parent to identify dyslexia in the early stages. This can be helpful in training and support the child socially to learn and socialise normally.  Dyslexia is a disability that affects both spoken and written language. They have a different learning style and when supported and encouraged, instead of mocked and insulted, they can become avid readers. The following are common 10 indicators of developing dyslexia in children, in general, and at school.

10 Behavioural signs to watch for in general:

  1. The child usually has difficulty concentrating and following instructions
  2. The child is easily distracted, seems to daydream, and tends to forget words.
  3. Poor personal organisation skills and is not very good at time keeping.
  4. May get confused between today, tomorrow, yesterday; east and west; right and left; up and down.
  5. Has difficulty remembering seasons, months and days.
  6. Tends to be doing something to avoid work.
  7. Seems distracted, and ‘daydream,’ does not seem to listen
  8. Requires a lot of effort focusing on things at hand and is constantly tired.
  9. Slow pace of processing in terms of spoken or written language
  10. Often appears withdrawn or lost in his own world.

10 Behaviours to watch for at school:

  1. Poor standard of writing and written work in comparison with oratory skills.
  2. Poor handwriting with badly formed letters.
  3. Confused easily between similar looking letters like m/w, n/u, b/d.
  4. Usually, messes up work by using close but wrong spellings and rewriting the same
  5. Mixes up words by using similar-looking words – quiet and quite, tired and tried.
  6. Same word is spelt differently at different times
  7. Poor motor skills and pencil grip leading to slow, inaccurate writing
  8. Produces a lot of phonetic spelling which does not change with repeated corrections
  9. There is difficulty in blending words together, and struggles a lot when asked to read out loud, can miss out or add words that are familiar in between
  10. Has difficulty connecting the story that is being written or read

As noted, these children have very inconsistent behaviour with very limited understanding of nonverbal communication. If these symptoms go on increasing as they grow, it is advisable to seek professional help so that support can be provided and the condition can be arrested at the early stages.

Torn Meniscus - Symptoms And Treatment!

MBBS, MS - Orthopaedics
Orthopedist, Chennai
Torn Meniscus - Symptoms And Treatment!

Your knee is guarded and cushioned by a cartilage known as meniscus. A meniscus tear, therefore, is an extremely painful and discomforting situation. It occurs very frequently and has emerged as one of the most commonly occurring cartilage injuries. What makes a meniscus tear an extremely common phenomenon is the way it can tear that is all it takes is a twist of the knee for it to happen.

People involved in sports mostly face the brunt of this form of injury. The risk of getting meniscus torn increases with age and tends to occur at the slightest change of direction of movement.

Symptoms
Some of the symptoms of a torn meniscus are:

  1. Pain and inflammation: It goes without saying that an internal injury of the cartilage or tearing away of it would inevitably result in extreme pain and inflammation near the knee.
  2. Immobility: The extreme pain and inflammation, which follows will inevitably make it difficult to move. Since the pain occurs in the joint, you will have difficulty in walking and any forceful movement will only aggravate the pain.
  3. Locking of the knee: Locking of the knee refers to a situation when you are unable to move your knee. This occurs most commonly after you have your meniscus torn.

Treatment
Notwithstanding its frequency of occurrence, there are several ways, by which you can treat a torn meniscus. Some of the ways are:

  1. Apply ice: In order to get some relief, applying ice is a suitable option. If you apply ice every day for some time, it wonders in reducing swelling and the consequent pain.
  2. Use a bandage: In order to control the swelling, it is important that you cover your knee with an elastic bandage.
  3. Change the posture: It is important that you keep the affected knee in an elevated plane, in order to ensure an efficient blood supply and a consequent relief from pain.

Some Medical Treatments
There are many things to consider when deciding how to treat your torn meniscus, including the extent and location of the tear, your pain level, your age and activity level, your doctor's preference, and when the injury occurred. Your medical treatment choices are:

  1. Nonsurgical treatment with compression, elevation, and physical therapy. This may include wearing a temporary shoulder brace.
  2. Surgical repair to sew the tear together.
  3. Partial meniscectomy, which is surgery to remove the torn section.
  4. Total meniscectomy, which is surgery to remove the entire meniscus. This is generally avoided, because this option increases the risk for osteoarthritis in the shoulder.
  5. Whenever possible, meniscus surgery is done using arthroscopy, rather than through a large cut in the shoulder.

Homeopathic Treatment For Joint Pain And Stiffness!

Homeopathic Treatment For Joint Pain And Stiffness!

If you have recently experienced pain and inflammation in the joints, then it could be a symptom of rheumatoid arthritis, which doesn’t subside on its own. This can lead to swelling and excessive pain along with stiffness and deformities in the affected area and can sometimes interrupt your regular routine as it limits your movement. This mainly affects people aged over 40 years, but this doesn’t imply that it cannot occur among young people. And if you are suffering from such a condition, then you can seek refuge in homeopathic treatments.

Why you should opt for homeopathic treatment?
Though most people are running after allopathic treatment these days, homeopathic treatment is far more effective since it uproots the cause of the joint ache and stiffness and helps you lead a happy and healthy life. Furthermore, it is 100% natural, meaning that the medications would not lead to any kind of ill effects in the future. Some of the most useful homeopathic treatments for joint pain include the following:

  1. Causticum for joint pain leading to deformities: If you are feeling weak to an extent that you are barely able to walk, then causticum can be of help. Sometimes it can lead to restlessness at night, with the restlessness particularly centred on the leg as the tendons tend to contract, causing acute pain as well as deformities. There can be loss of sensation owing to excessive pain, and it becomes nearly impossible to hold anything firmly.
  2. Caulophyllum: This is especially a remedy for woman, implying that the medicine is effective in treating the joint stiffness, pain and other allied symptoms found among women. If your toes and hands are affected with erratic and severe pain which shifts from one place to another in a short span of time, then you may have to take this medication.
  3. Colchicum: If you have been suffering from joint aches for a long time, then this homeopathic remedy would work well for you. The drawing nature of the pain is known to affect important tissues like synovial membranes and periosteum along with muscular tissues, and all the parts appear swelled up and inflamed. The pain becomes excruciating and the patient cannot allow the affected place to be touched. There is also a feeling as if the fingers are being pinned, making the rest of the hand numb.

These are some of the best known medications for the treatment of joint pain, though it is always recommended to ask an expert to know what would work best in alleviating your symptoms.

A Diet Plan To Lose Weight Successfully!

The past couple of days have witnessed trending news in the form of the stunning transformation of Anant Ambani, son of Mukesh Ambani, MD of Reliance Industries Limited. Anant, who had previously been burdened with excessive body weight due to intake of some strong medications, has achieved an unbelievable target of losing 108 Kgs of body weight in just 18 months!

Many people suffer from obesity and many other conditions as an aftereffect of excessive body weight, but don't know how to address the issue to attain a healthy weight. In this regard, the story of Anant is an inspirational lesson for all those who want to lose weight and follow a strict diet plan and exercise regime continuously to achieve their goals. Just like him, now you too can attain a healthy body weight and a fit physique too through the techniques mentioned below:

1. Following an Appropriate Diet Plan - A healthy diet is the key to a good weight loss regime besides the implementation of an effective exercise plan. Anant had opted for a strict low-carb diet without the presence of sugar. This type of diet has a lot of benefits including weight loss in a healthy way. This type of diet requires you to avoid all types of processed food items including breads, soft drinks, cereals, pastas, sweets etc. And increase the intake of foods rich in healthy fats and proteins.

2. Weight and Functional Training - Weight training is known for burning calories and functional training helps in increasing your core stability through exercises like squats, stretches, lunges etc. A combination of these two in your exercise regime will not only help you lose weight, but will also enable you to do it in a healthy way.

3. High-intensity Cardio Exercises - High-intensity cardio exercises are recommended by most gym instructors to people who want to lose weight as they increase your heart rate and consume lesser amount of time to eliminate the extra fat from your body.

4. Yoga - There’s no better way to stay fit and healthy than making yoga a part of your daily lifestyle. This ancient tradition not only tones your muscles and burn calories, but also gives you a healthier life by helping you relax your mind and body both. This was also one of the techniques followed by Anant to reach his destination of a having a healthy body.

We've put together a sample diet plan exclusively for you, which can help you lose weight in a healthy natural way:

Early Morning (6:30 am - 7:00 am) - a glass of warm water + 1/2 lemon juice + pinch of salt; walk for 30 minutes.

Breakfast (8:00am - 9:00 am) - 1 cup milk/tea, with fruit, oats with milk/namkeen oats, veg. Dalia, veg. Upma, veg. Poha, veg. Sandwich, 2 egg whites/1 whole egg and toast.

Mid-Morning (11:30 am) - fruit/sprouts

Lunch (1:00 pm - 2:00 pm) - 2 chapattis with vegetable, salad, dal/curd/idli + sambhar (alternatively, if you want to have 1 bowl rice, have it with 1 katori rajma/kadhi/dal/chhole + salad)

Tea-Time (4:30pm - 5:00pm) - tea/coffee + 2 biscuits/rusks

Evening Snacks (6:00 pm - 6: 30pm) - roasted chana, sprouts, popcorn, veg sandwich, sometimes 4-5 almonds, walnuts, pista, raisins

Dinner (8:00 pm - 8:30 pm) - 1-2 chapattis with vegetable, salad or 1-2 veg sandwiches, or roasted chicken/grilled fish (if non-vegetarian)

Post-Dinner (if required, at 10:00 pm) - 1 cup of milk.

We hope the above suggestions and the sample diet plan will inspire you to embark on a journey of transforming yourself into a healthier and happier person! There's no happiness better than feeling good about yourself!

Suffering From Pre-diabetes - How You Can Prevent It From Becoming Type 2 Diabetes?

MBBS, DNB (General Medicine)
Endocrinologist, Delhi
Suffering From Pre-diabetes - How You Can Prevent It From Becoming Type 2 Diabetes?

If your blood sugar has shot to the border level, but not quite high enough to be considered as Diabetes, think of it as a blessing. You are given the opportunity to take corrective measures and prevent the onset of diabetes. The ball is still in your court and you can take the right steps to prevent it from evolving to Type 2 Diabetes.

Here are the best ways to prevent:

  1. Know where do you stand: Find out your blood sugar levels by getting a blood sugar test done. Being older than 45 with a Body Mass Index above 25, puts you at a greater risk, so get your blood sugar checked. Even more pressing reasons to get checked can be high blood pressure or cholesterol or history of diabetes in the immediate family.
  2. Eat healthy: Food is medicine and what you feed your body, impacts the most on your overall health. Is your diet full of fast food and highly processed foods? Then, its time to change to a well-balanced diet full of wholesome nutrients. Eat regularly scheduled meals with a wide variety of foods in order to avoid extreme blood sugar spikes.
  3. Bust the stress: Chronic stress tends to suppress your immune system and lead to grave consequences. Since, stress aggravates your blood sugar levels, practice techniques of Yoga and meditation to drive stress away from your life.
  4. Move your body: When you are at a greater risk of diabetes it is time to act and avoid a sedentary lifestyle. Regular exercise can help you manage your overall health and boost your energy levels. Also, exercise keeps blood sugar levels from spiking after meals and active muscles will use insulin efficiently. Maintain a good fitness regime with 30 minutes of moderate exercise like walking, jogging, aerobics at least 5 days a week and opt for intensive exercises like cardio, weight training or strength training at least twice a week.
  5. Get quality sleep: Deprivation of sleep derails metabolism. According to studies, people who clock less than 6 hours of sleep are more likely to see their blood sugar climb up into the pre-diabetes territory. A short sleep for a prolonged time can potentially set the stage for high blood sugar.
  6. Medication: In most cases, simple lifestyle changes like the above will help to prevent type 2 diabetes. But in special cases, you can visit a doctor and he may prescribe certain drugs to keep the glucose production in check.

Prediabetes is a warning sign and a good wakeup call for you. So, wake up and take the right steps for a better tomorrow. If you wish to discuss any specific problem, you can consult an endocrinologist.

What should be my weight according to height of 5 feet 10 inch? My weight is 94. How much I should try to loose? And ...
Hi dear your ideal weight should be 67 to 83 kg Diet and lack of exercise are the two most important factors that contribute to obesity. While the modern day diet is becoming more and more full of fats, sweets and empty calories, it is becoming devoid of nutritious vitamins and minerals. The fibre content is also decreasing. One tends to stack up on junk food in an effort to take a quick bite while on the go. At the same time, physical activity is on the decline. One has increased access to vehicles and the need to walk or cycle is almost not present. Even for commuting short distances, one uses cars or two wheelers. All these things are readily contributing to this epidemic of obesity. When it comes to getting rid of the excess fat, one needs to work conscientiously and consistently on both the counts mentioned above. One’s diet has to be altered so as to include more and more natural fruits and vegetables. Processed food and junk food should be cut down to the minimum. A daily exercise regimen needs to be adopted. Exercising for 30-40 minutes for a minimum of 5 days a week is necessary. Homeopathy helps by regulating the metabolic system of the individual. There are more than 100 medicines listed in the Homeopathic literature for obesity. It is a tough job selecting the right medicine for a particular patient. One needs to take into account a lot of things before selecting the right course of treatment. These things relate to other symptoms or conditions that may be present or the person may be suffering from. A lot of importance is given to the reason, if any can be found that stimulated weight gain. This reason could be a particular illness or an event or some psychological setback in life. The general reaction of the person to extremes of temperature, his or heating habits also need to be taken into account. You can easily take an online consultation for further treatment guidance and permanent cure without any side effects.
