Great Skin: 5 Habits of Women

Great Skin: 5 Habits of Women

Healthy, glowing skin is what they call 'neighbour's envy, owner's pride'. Stop being jealous janet and get off your chair because you need to do a little homework to get that glowing skin. Some women look like they have inherited the glow without a day's work but in reality, good skin is a result of constant care and solutions that suit them right. Here are some fail proof techniques that women with great skin follow.

1. They cleanse it right: Cleansing the skin is almost done like a ritual. It has its set of rules which differ from skin to skin. As a base rule, women with good complexion do it at least twice a day - once in the morning and once before bed. It helps clear the oil, dirt, impurities and make up that clogs the pores and lets the skin breath. Use lukewarm water and a creamy cleanser. Let the cleanser sit on your skin for a minute while you gently rub it in before you wash off. This is one step women with good skin simply don't miss.

2. They remember their ctm: You know what the c stands for, now you need to follow it with a toning and moisturizing ritual to keep your skin soft and supple. Learn to differentiate between night and day moisturizers. You day moisturizer needs to contribute to your spf protection while your night moisturizer should be hydrating.

3. They use a good night cream: Night time is when your skin gets to relax and rejuvenate. Help this process by adding a good night cream to your daily ritual. A retinoid cream, for example, is a vitamin a derivative rich in collagen which helps in skin repair. They can also help reduce the occurrence of fine lines and pimples.

4. They work on their blemishes: Some have puffy eyes, others have dark circles or sun spots and may be even a couple of wrinkles here and there. But all these flaws can be steadily worked upon on a daily basis to reduce the skin problems and prevent appearance of new ones.

5. They follow the antioxidant mantra: Foods rich in omega 3 and antioxidant-rich foods like blueberries, green leafy veggies, and green tea help reduce the effects of aging to add a youthful glow to the skin.

White Hair or greying hair mainly occurs when your hair follicles stop producing melanin, the pigment that gives hair its color. Though, ageing is the primary reason of grey hair  but premature greying of hair in early 20’s or 30’s is now common. Genetic factors, stress, lack of nutrition, chemicals, smoking or any underlying disease like anemia can also lead to premature greying of hair. All these factors lead to underproduction melanin that leads to grey or white hair. Lack of minerals like zinc, copper is one of the most underestimated yet one of the most analysed reasons for grey hair. Turning already grey hair into black is not possible after a particular age, but you can always slow down further greying of hair. A balanced diet is the most effective solution to control greying of hair. Include lots of fresh fruits, vegetables, protein rich sources of food in your diet. Load up on food items containing antioxidant and vitamin C like gooseberry, oranges, lemon etc.

I have black spots and pimples are heavy in my face I feel pain full and irritating.
Pimples occur mainly due to hormonal imbalances which causes an overproduction of oil and cells inside a skin follicle. They block the opening of the skin pore and cause the follicle under the skin to swell and become red. It usually starts in teenage, but most of the time lasts into adulthood.  1. Avoid breaking the boils  2. Use a good sunscreen properly  You can start with the following  1. Erytop gel apply twice a day on entire face

While your hair mostly depends on your genetics;  stress, hormonal imbalance and poor diet have a great influence on your hair health and appearance. Start by following a good diet - Eat adequate amount of protein. Your hair is made up mainly of proteins. Include skimmed milk, cottage cheese, lentils in diet. Vitamin C, Zinc and Vitamin B are other important nutrients for great hair health. So include lot of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains in your daily diet. Next important step is to follow good hair care - Oiling your hair with a mixture of oils like olive, sesame, coconut and castor oil keeps provides moisture to your hair and prevent them from drying and breakage. Once in a week apply a good hair mask. You can mix and prepare different types of masks using green tea, olive oil, milk, gooseberry,  etc. Condition your hair using organic Apple Cider Vinegar, Rosemary tea once in a while. Choosing a good shampoo according to your hair type is very important. Dry or brittle hair requires different shampoo than from oily hair. A professional hair and scalp examination to get right hair care products for you is worth than spending time and energy on wrong products.

Hello doctor I am 34 years male my problem is my face growing dark circles or layers looking different two types face...
Dark circles are fairly common problem many people face. While ageing is the primary cause of dark circles, but with the changing lifestyle, hectic work schedule and poor nutrition, more and more people are facing dark circles. Those who are anaemic, are stresses out, have poor digestion, stay dehydrated or have a family history of dark circles are more prone to dark circles. Skin around eyes is the thinnest and that is why poor blood circulation in that particular area appears more prominently in the form of blue/black eyes. The best treatment to treat dark circles is to increase oxygen circulation in your body with the help of exercises, yoga. Taking break between hectic work schedule and splashing your eyes with cold water 2-3 times a day is helpful. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, have a balanced diet, eat more iron and zinc containing foods like dates, nuts and dry fruits. Many topical creams that contain kojic acid helps to reduce dark circles but they should be taken after consulting a good dermatologist only. Some latest treatments like light therapy, skin resurfacing and injectable fillers give faster and long lasting results, but before you choose one it's important to determine the cause.

Can Fillers Be Used For Ageing Hands?

MBBS, DNB (Dermatology)

Can Fillers Be Used For Ageing Hands?

It is said that a hand reflects the personality of an individual. A well-maintained manicured hands with skin and nail care talks a lot about a person. Aside from the head and neck, it is also the most exposed part of the body. Whether we like it or not, aging is inevitable and does not spare any part of the body. The hands also lose volume, sag, wrinkle, and tan. The veins become prominent, knuckles jut out, and bones and tendons become stand out. While most people take care of the aging effects on the face, the hands are often ignored. There are even cases where there is a mismatch in the appearance of the hands and the face, causing cosmetic and psychological concerns.

The loss of skin volume can be replaced by restoring the soft tissue, which is achievable by injecting fillers into the hands. These improve skin elasticity, improve volume, and reduce wrinkles. The prominence of the bones and knuckles are therefore reduced, producing a less-aged appearance.

  1. Calcium Hydroxyapatite: This inert, biocompatible, inorganic component prompts collagen production. It has high viscosity and high elasticity and acts as a wonderful filler. It is usually injected alone or after mixing with lidocaine (a local anaesthetic) into different areas of the hand. It blends nicely with the skin and conceals tendons and bones. It requires repetitive procedures and takes about 6 to 18 months for the full effect to be seen. There are minimal side effects including bruising, oedema, and tenderness.

  2. Hyaluronic Acid: The skin contains hyaluronic acid naturally, and with ageing, the amount of it reduces. This provides a matrix for dermal tissue, giving it the elasticity and thickness, which is lost with age. Therefore injecting hyaluronic acid helps improve elasticity and thickness. It increases collagen formation in the underlying layers of the skin and acts as a filler. Recent advances have used injections of cross-linked HA which is more resistant to degradation, thereby producing longer lasting results.

  3. Autologous Fat Injections: Fat from another body area usually the thighs or the upper arms is either freshly harvested or harvested and frozen and thawed. This is then injected into the hands to act as fillers. This requires repetitive procedures, as the results are not sustained. There could also be uneven surfaces with lumps in the hands where fat has been injected. There are also chances of infection and oedema in this procedure.

As noted, there are ways to avoid the ageing effects on the hands. A word of caution, though, whatever the approach you choose, ensure you place yourself in the hands of an experienced, qualified surgeon to take care of your ageing hands!!

Hi! Oily skin is a common cosmetic problem that is characterized by medium to large-sized pores, a shiny appearance, especially around the area of the nose, chin, and forehead, and a tendency to develop blemishes and blackheads. Stress, medications, hormones, incorrect products and changes in seasons can rob skin of needed moisture, causing it to produce a surge of oil to compensate for what’s lacking; overuse of products including make-up which is not suitable for your skin type, and sun tan can injure skin and cause it to produce excess oil. Skin always reacts in the opposite way to the way we want it to: the more vigorously you attempt to remove the sebum, the more skin will produce oil to replace it. It is therefore important to consult a dermatologist to understand what kind of products are to be used according to your skin type. A dermatologist can help you identify various cleansers, etc. Which are most suitable to your skin to not only get immediate relief from oily skin but also avoid unpleasant itching and dryness. There are various chemical peels available which helps in cleaning the pores from within and it is always advisable to get peels done from a well-qualified dermatologist only.

Hi ! Thanks for your query. Hair loss, now-a-days, is common among males and females of all age groups. We all lose some hair strands every day, however, some people lose more than normal strands in a day that can cause severe hair loss. Hair loss is mostly genetic, so if hair loss runs in your family, you are most likely to suffer from hair loss too. Hair loss happens either in clumps that is overall hair loss, or focussed on any one part of head - especially the crown. While genetics play a big role, some additional factors can aggravate hair loss - hormonal imbalance, stress, thyroid disease, anemia, protein deficiency, chemotherapy, and low vitamin levels may cause hair loss in you. Start by following a good diet - Eat adequate amount of protein. Your hair is made up mainly of proteins. Include skimmed milk, cottage cheese, lentils. Vitamin C, Zinc and Vitamin B are other important nutrients for great hair health. So include lot of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains in your daily diet. Exercise daily to keep yourself healthy inside out. Next important step is to follow good hair care - Oiling your hair with a mixture of oils like olive, sesame, coconut and castor oil keeps provides moisture to your hair and prevent them from drying and breakage. Once in a week apply a good hair mask. You can mix and prepare different types of masks using green tea, olive oil, milk, gooseberry, thyme, chamomile etc. Condition your hair using organic Apple Cider Vinegar, Rosemary tea once in a while. Since some hair loss is temporary, your hair will grow back on its own without medical treatment.

My skin type is sensitive and oily. I have little marks on face. How to get glowing and clear skin.
A flawless glowing skin is a dream come true. Treat your skin gently and see your dream become a reality. Always apply sunscreen half an hour before going out in the sun. Reapply sunscreen every 3-4 hours till evening. Keep your skin covered in pollution and dust. If you think that applying great products alone will give you glowing skin, then you are wrong. You are what you eat. Nutrition plays an important role to keep you glowing inside out. Eat fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains. Try to limit intake of junk, smoke and alcohol as these harm your skin the most. One key point I would emphasise here is to exfoliate your skin regularly. Regular exfoliation can be done both by using natural products like gram flour and yogurt or fullers earth. Using sunscreen after exfoliation is must, so never skip the sunscreen. Exfoliation along with daily moisturisation works wonders on your skin. Pamper your skin once in a week with a good face mask, massage and a relaxing bath. If your skin remains dull even after following all the above advices, then do not hesitate to book an appointment with your nearest dermatologist. An expert advice is always recommended to test the underlying causes of skin dullness and help it improve faster.

8 Things That Help You Prevent Blackheads

MBBS, DNB (Dermatology)
Dermatologist, Mumbai
8 Things That Help You Prevent Blackheads

An overproduction of oil, combined with dirt, bacteria, dead skin cells or residual make-up, usually lead up to clogged up pores, that appear black in colour, to show up on your skin. These are called blackheads. Though treating blackheads is not that difficult, it is always better to prevent them.

Here are some tips to prevent blackheads:

  1. The basic thing you can do to keep blackheads away is to wash your face regularly. It is important to keep your face clean, to prevent oil and dirt build-up, which clogs pores and lead to blackheads.
    • Use gentle cleansers that contain salicylic acid.
    • Never wash your face with hot water; use lukewarm water instead.
    • If you have oily skin, use oil-free cleansers. If you have dry skin, use cream or glycerine-based cleansers.
    • Avoid bar soaps since they tend to clog pores.
  2. Washing your face is important, but make sure not to over-wash. Washing your face frequently will irritate skin, strip it off its natural oils and cause more breakouts. Washing your face two-times in a day is sufficient.
  3. Always remove your make-up before you go to bed. Cosmetic products or make-up, if left on skin for too long, can lead to clogged pores.
    • Use gentle make-up remover or cleanser to remove make-up.
    • Keep your make-up brushes or cosmetic sponges clean to prevent bacteria that can cause clogged pores.
  4. If you lead a very active lifestyle, always shower after laborious activities. Sweating generally leads to an overload of bacteria, which ends up causing blackheads.
  5. After washing your face, don’t forget to apply moisturiser. Sufficiently hydrated skin actually helps keep blackheads at bay. Always use a moisturiser meant for your skin types. For example, if you have oily skin, don’t go for heavy creams; choose oil-free lightweight creams instead.
  6. Since excessive dead skin cells are also a cause of blackheads, it is imperative to exfoliate regularly. Gently exfoliate your skin to remove bacteria and dead skin cells to prevent blackheads.
    • Exfoliating will prevent blackheads, so if you already have blackheads, simply exfoliating won’t do.
    • Choose gentle exfoliators as harsh scrubs can irritate your skin.
  7. Having oily skin means your battle with blackheads is never-ending. The best way to combat blackheads, is to use products that absorb extra oil.
    • Weekly clay masks, counter benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid treatments can be extremely beneficial.
  8. Lastly, if you do think you see a blackhead on your nose, don’t touch it! Touching or picking it will only spread bacteria and oil, causing more blackheads. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

Can Genetics be the Cause of Acne in Adult

MBBS, DNB (Dermatology)
Dermatologist, Mumbai
Can Genetics be the Cause of Acne in Adult

Acne is a condition that usually occurs when you are in your adolescence, but sometimes it can happen when you are an adult as well. In women, it occurs when they have reached their menopausal age. The chances of adult acne occurring in women are higher than men.

What causes acne in adults

  1. Stress: If you are under stress on a regular basis, then the body tends to produce a hormone called androgen which stimulates oil glands in the skin, resulting in acne flare ups.
  2. Hormonal imbalance: Hormonal imbalance in the body may lead to acne breakouts. You may experience imbalances in your hormones during your periods or when you have reached menopause. Acne may also occur if you have started or stopped taking birth control pills abruptly.
  3. Family history: If other people in the family are prone to acne, then you may be genetically predisposed to it.
  4. Medications: There are certain medications which can cause acne to flare up. They contain chemicals that stimulate hormones in the body thus, resulting in acne.
  5. Skin products: If you have oily skin, then using products that contain oil may aggravate acne. They may also contain chemicals which may clog pores in your skin.

Symptoms of acne in adults are often seen as bumps on the skin, blisters filled with pus and inflamed black heads. Apart from these some people also witness hard and painful lumps beneath the skin.

Prevention:

  1. Stay away from junk food: Avoid eating junk food and fried foods as they can aggravate oiliness in the skin and result in pimples. Rather, replace them with natural foods and other complex carbs.
  2. Drink plenty of water:  Drink plenty of water as it helps in filtering out the waste products and toxins from your body.
  3. Avoid smoking: Smoking causes blood vessels to narrow and thus, limits blood circulation in the body. This may cause multiple complications in your skin, acne being one of them.

If you wish to discuss about any specific skin problem, you can consult a specilized dermatologist and ask a free question.

Hi! Losing your hair can do serious damage to your self-esteem. But luckily, there are plenty of options out there now to help you fight it. Hair loss can affect both men and women. Hi! The darkening is due to excessive weight, hormonal issue and friction. Losing weight will help the darkening. Do not scrub very hard, it will make the skin more dark. Wear loose fitting cotton clothes. Avoid using harsh soaps, perfumes directly on skin. You can try this home remedy: Squeeze crushed cucumber to extract the juice and then add the lemon juice and turmeric. Stir well and apply on the affected area. Leave it on for 15 minutes and then rinse it thoroughly with water. Do this daily or every other day. Do not apply if there are cuts or scratches. There are treatment sessions done in Dermatologist's office for faster results.

Hi! We live in a society where fair skin is considered a valued trait of beauty. But genetic predisposition and poor lifestyle choices can often cause unwarranted skin darkening and localized pigmentation. These skin changes are mainly caused due to excessive melanin production. This skin darkening can also be a result of various factors such as overexposure to sun, damage due to chemical exposure, hormonal changes and even side effects of certain diseases. You can start out with the following basic care: 1.Use a good sunscreen like Photostable, Sun ban etc. 2.Increase the blood supply and oxygen to the skin, exercise regularly or practice yoga 3.Avoid harsh chemicals and fragrant products on face. 4.Home Remedy: Mash half banana. Add 1/2 teaspoon of lemon juice and half teaspoon of sandalwood powder, make a smooth paste apply it for 10 minutes then rinse off with water. 5.Have fruit juices, soups, milk regularly in diet. Hope this helps.

Hi! You can use a ketoconazole containing antidandruff shampoo like “Scalpe”after washing scalp with your regular shampoo thrice a week for a month and then as maintenance at least once a week for 2 months. Avoid hair styling products and gels on scalp. Do not keep scalp oiled for long time. Do not share combs etc. Air dry your hair. Avoid using hair dryers. Do not scratch or itch. Use facecare facewash twice a day. Use nadoxin gel on the pimple very little amount or one pea size drop for full face once a day for 15 days. Pimples if come very frequently require a long course of tablets so see a nearby dermatologist for further treatment or if no satisfactory response.
