Dear lybrate-user,
from the fact that you quickly became hypothyroid after carbimazole it looks like the underlying problem may be an autoimmune thyroiditis or subacute thyroiditis .please check tpo antibodies and inform results

I am sorry to hear about your concern but will be happy to assist you.
Thyrotoxicosis is the clinical manifestation of excess thyroid hormone action at the tissue level due to inappropriately high circulating thyroid hormone concentrations. Hyperthyroidism, a subset of thyrotoxicosis, refers specifically to excess thyroid hormone synthesis and secretion by the thyroid gland.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query.
Your thyroid test results are in the normal range. There is no reason to take any treatment at present. You will have to monitor the levels once is six months to see if there is any major change. At present there is no problem at all. If you have any doubts please comeback. Thanks.

Hello, Thanks for the query.
Usually with high anti TPO antibodies, there is lymphocyte infiltration in thyroid gland. This usually causes hypothyroidism. However, increased antibody level in Hyperthyroidism means there is a significant autoimmune process going on. There is no specific treatment directed towards reducing these antibodies. However, intake of selenium is to help in reduction. Thanks.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query.
Graves disease (hyperthyroidism) can be controlled with anti-thyroid drugs. Treatment has to continue for at least 12 to 18 months. After that if the gland function becomes normal, then treatment may be discontinued. But the condition may revert after certain time (many months or so). There is no complete cure. Thanks.

Hyperthyroidism is initially treated with Anti-thyroid drugs (as being given now Neomercazole). With treatment for over 18 to 24 months, in many patients Thyroid activity returns to normal, with TSH becoming normal and T3 & T4 levels showing normal levels. If this happens then further treatment is usually not required. But some times hyperactivity does return. Then other options are considered.
