Hashimotos Thyroiditis and subsequent Hypothyroidism is a common endocrine disorder . This is an auto immune condition. This means that your body's immune system attacks your own thyroid cells and might eventually destroy the cells. There are many causes which can precipitate this attack like a viral attack, trauma, post partum period, +ve family history, selenium deficiency etc.

Hashimoto is autoimune condition where body produces antibodies against thyroid gland enzymes. Iodine is raw material for thyroid hormones. But when manufacturing unit is getting destroyed it won't help.
