This medication belongs to a class of medications called tetracyclines which block a bacterial protein from being made and therefore prevents the growth of bacteria. Common side effects include diarrhoea, a red rash, nausea, vomiting, flue symptoms, skin allergies and an increased risk of a sunburn. In young children and pregnant women it may result in permanent problems with teeth and bone development. It is considered safe in people who are breastfeeding.
