Hello, friends. I am Nidhi, founder of Pathya wellness. Pathya, as a name suggests, is a Balanced wholesome diet.

Now, this brings me to the topic, that whenever we discuss the diet or about going on a diet, it is often assumed that we would be eating boring diet food, we would be starving or we would be depriving ourselves. The diet is expressed in hush tots. We avoid talking about diet with our friends or with our parents. We feel being ridiculed or being made fun of. And we have a fear of being discouraged. Why is it so?

We join exercise regime, we join new to an exercise regime. We announce it to the whole world, we tell our friends about the new gym, about the new salsa class or the yoga class.

What is exercise exactly?

It is a physical activity which we are enrolled in. So why do we hesitate to discuss diet?

Diet is nothing but simply eating food. Whatever we eat in our daily routine is our diet. And all of us eat food so why to hesitate to talk on this topic?

To the majority of people, diet is associated with weight loss. It is not so. So what does the diet involve?

One of the factors which diet involve is "Eating mindfully". Being conscious of what we are putting on the plate, what we are eating. It could mean eating in smaller size plates rather than bigger one. It does not really mean depriving ourselves of our favourite food. We can have our favourite food without any hesitation. You can even have your favourite chocolate bar or a piece of cake. But it is necessary to eat these things in moderation and balance it with some other low-calorie diet. So the major points of this factor is;

  • Mindful eating
  • Balancing
  • Moderation

Another important factor which we need to take care of involves, "Emotional eating". Sometimes we associate food with our emotions. Whenever we are happy or sad, we start thinking about food. Food becomes our Soley's provider. And one of the factor we fear going on diet is that we are afraid that our Soley's provider will be taken away from me. That bar of chocolate which we relish will be taken away from us. It need not be so. While dieting, still you can have that chocolate.

Now, how to achieve this? How to be on a diet?

You can follow few easy steps for some time and be confident on the diet and on yourself. Keep the steps in flow and take the final major leap. you will find yourself healthy and better. So, the diet is basically a change in lifestyle. So, it need not be discussed in hush tots, it need not be associated with starvation.

So, eat healthy, eat moderately and drink lots of water. Keep yourself hydrated and just keep moving. These are the few necessary tips to keep "healthier you".

You can contact me through Lybrate or you can contact me in La Pathya wellness at R 274, GK-1.

Thank you.

Poly Cystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD) - Dietary Tips To Treat It!

Poly Cystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD) - Dietary Tips To Treat It!

A rising number of teenage girls in the country are getting affected with Poly Cystic Ovarian Disease or PCOD. Though an advanced menarche has become very rampant these days, there are many young women who are suffering from a delay in menarche which in turn is leading to PCOD as opined by gynaecologists. Obesity and sedentary lifestyle among young people have caused a rapid doubling of PCOD cases in the past five to eight years.

Occurrence and Symptoms:

Gynaecologists report that they get at least 15 fresh instances of PCOD cases, and a considerable number of teenagers aged 16-17 are not getting their menarche. Such patients are recommended to take a strictly balanced diet which will help them to lose weight. Initially, their mothers think that they would experience their menarche in proper time, but some girls are diagnosed with PCOD when taken to a family gynaecologist. Even worse, they could never imagine that their obesity can pave the way for such a grave health issue. PCOD can cause numerous other problems like delayed and irregular menses, rapid weight gain and tremendous difficulty in losing weight, developing acne and blocked skin pores.

Furthermore, it leads to thinning of hair and excessive growth of hair on chest, back and face. Infertility, continual miscarriagehigh blood pressure and high blood sugar are also common with PCOD.

Help yourself with the right diet:

There is no proven evidence regarding the cause of PCOD though gynaecologists are of the opinion that some females possess a predisposition to this disease, and it may run hereditarily in the family. You can alleviate your PCOD symptoms to a considerable extent by regulating your diet properly.

Have loads of fruits and green leafy vegetables and try to abstain from dairy products as many experts believe that dairy products are a direct cause of an increase in insulin levels, which can aggravate skin troubles along with other PCOD symptoms. Avoiding red meat and eating lean meat instead will help the condition and reduce the chances of infertility. It is always recommended to avoid hydrogenated and saturated fats, which are normally found in animal and dairy-based food. Try to put a stop to cheese, cottage cheese, clarified butter, pork, lamb, beef, etc. and certain baked products like cookies, cakes and fudges as they will trigger a rise in your blood sugar and cholesterol levels.

The following dietary tips can be helpful with the condition:

  • High levels of the insulin hormone causes PCOS symptoms like high blood sugar, increased hair growth, weight gain etc. So, refined foods rich in fat and carbohydrates should be consumed in small amounts.
  • Whole foods in their natural, uncooked form should be consumed fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans etc. These are low glycemic foods that reduce the glucose circulation by insulin.
  • Intake of salt should be very limited. You should not consume more than 3 grams a day.
  • Green vegetables have antioxidants. These are good for women with PCOS because they have a high amount of oxidative stress.
  • Your daily diet should contain at least 30 grams of fiber to improve the digestion process and remove toxins.
  • Milk and dairy products are best avoided because milk helps to increase the level of testosterone (male hormone) in the body.
  • Soy products should also be avoided, especially if you are trying to conceive, because they interfere with the ovulation cycle.
  • Processed fat is harmful but essential fatty acids found in avocado, fish, olive oil and nuts are important for the body.
  • High levels of male hormones also cause high cholesterol. So foods which have high saturated fats like butter, cream, coconut oil and fatty meat should not be included in the regular diet of women with PCOS.
  • Protein-rich foods like lean meat, fish, legumes, whole grains are beneficial as protein can stabilize blood sugar. These foods also keep you feeling full and prevent over-eating.

PCOD is such a condition which you can never afford to overlook. If you had been facing any of the common symptoms, then it is probably time to pay a visit to a responsive gynaecologist.

The 5 Best Foods For A Good Night Sleep!

The 5 Best Foods For A Good Night Sleep!

Everyone knows that drinking a cup of coffee before bed can leave you tossing and turning for hours. Eating the right food not only gives the body the right kind of nutrition, it also affects the quality of your sleep. While some foods are sleep deprivers, others are sleep enhancers. Here are a few such types of food that you can include in your diet to improve your sleep.

  1. Cherries: Cherries are rich sources of melatonin. This is the chemical responsible for controlling the body’s internal clock. A serving of tart cherries in their raw, whole form or a glass of cherry juice(without added sugars) can improve sleep quality and help treat chronic insomnia. It can also be used to fight jet lag.
  2. WalnutsThese nuts are rich sources of an amino acid known as trytophan. Trytophan boosts serotonin and melatonin production thus regulating the body’s sleep-wake cycle. This can help you fall asleep faster and avoid tossing and turning.
  3. MilkA glass of warm milk is a well known home remedy for insomnia. Milk or any form of dairy is rich in tryptophan. As mentioned above, this helps people fall asleep faster by regularizing their circadian rhythm. Additionally, calcium also helps regulate muscle movements and calms the body by fighting stress and stabilizing nerve fibers. If you don’t like the thought of plain milk, you could try other forms of dairy like cheese and yogurt.
  4. RiceJasmine rice and other forms of white rice have a high glycemic index. This means that the body digests rice slowly and hence releases glucose produced during digestion very gradually into the body. This helps cut down the time it takes to fall asleep. A gradual absorption of glucose in the body also prevents a ‘sugar high’ and its accompanying crash. This helps prevent waking up in the middle of the night and ensures that you sleep through the night comfortably.
  5. Bananas: Bananas are great not only for your overall health but also for your sleep cycle. Bananas are rich sources of magnesium and potassium. These are natural muscle relaxants that promote sleep. They also help fight sleep disorders such as restless leg syndrome and muscle cramps to give you a more restful sleep. Bananas are also rich in carbohydrates that are slow to digest and hence make people fall asleep faster. Combining bananas and milk is a sure shot way of falling asleep faster.

Why Diabetes & Fruits Go Hand-in-Hand?

Why Diabetes & Fruits Go Hand-in-Hand?

Can diabetes patients eat fruits?

It is a common understanding that fruits are not good for diabetic patients or they should not eat fruits, but is it really true? Almost all diabetic patients hesitate to eat fruits, as they consider them to contain sugar and since they already suffer from high sugar, they believe that eating fruits will spike it further.

Does diabetes mean excess sugar in blood?

No, diabetes means excess glucose in blood, not sugar. So, what's the difference? The difference is that all sugars are not glucose. Glucose is just one type of sugar and the only sugar that can cause diabetes. Glucose is present in most of the foods that we eat. It is highest in white table sugar, processed & packed foods and grains like rice & wheat.

Which kind of sugar is present in fruits?

Fruits contain a type of sugar known as fructose. Fructose is a simple sugar like glucose. However, it acts very differently as compared to glucose, and it does not mix with blood, as glucose does, and is stored in the liver. Therefore, Fructose acts as stored sugar and not as instant sugar like glucose. Some fruits also contain glucose, but it is present in much lower quantity, which is not responsible for increasing the blood glucose level. Remember, glucose is the energy or fuel for the body and even diabetic patients need it. But certainly not in excess.

Fruits & diabetes

  • Fruits, having fructose, do not increase the level of blood glucose and because of this, fruits are not only safe for diabetic patients but they also help in lowering the level of glucose.
  • Fruits also come packed with so many useful vitamins and minerals, that maintain the nutritional balance of the body.
  • Moreover, fruits provide a good dose of soluble fiber helps in lowering the level of glucose in the blood.

Conclusion

Diabetic patients must not hesitate to eat fruits but they must eat 3 different types of fruits every day, including one citrus fruit like orange & sweet lime.

Healthier Low Carb Homemade Tomato Ketchup!

Healthier Low Carb Homemade Tomato Ketchup!

The problem with the commercialized ketchup available in all markets is that even though they may be addictive, they often contain high-fructose corn syrup, cane sugar, brown rice syrup, cane crystals and tomato concentrates in place of naturally produced tomatoes. As a result, they bring about a host of health problems which propels one to prepare home-made tomato chutney easily with a handful of ingredients.

The simple home-made tomato chutney can also be consumed as ketchup, and it is quite easy to prepare as well. A different recipe that needs garlic, ginger along with some dry red chilies or chili flakes, the recipe is healthy as well. The red chilies add a gentle touch of hotness as well as smokiness which you will feel while cooking. The chutney can be a good option to be used as an accompaniment with snacks or other foods.

Ingredients For The Homemade Tomato Chutney
For making around 2.5 kg of tomato chutney, you will require the same amount of tomatoes, around 5 grams of garlic, a quarter inch ginger and 5 to 7 dry red chilies which should be deseeded and halved. You may also add half-a-cup of raisins, half cup of apple cider vinegar, one tablespoon of rock salt, about a quarter teaspoon of sodium benzoate dissolved in warm water. The sodium benzoate acts as a preservative so that the shelf life of the product is more. You should try to replace sugar with the natural element stevia which is not just super sweet but has no calories with a zero-glycemic index. It is a great sweetener and is available in the woods of Brazil and Paraguay. You will be surprised to know that the leaves of this plant are about 300 times sweeter than sugar. It would stay good for 6 months, but the taste would be so amazing that you will end up finishing it sooner.

Procedure To Make The Chutney
Rinse the tomatoes and raisins well in water and chop the tomatoes in roughly sliced pieces. Now peel the ginger, garlic and chop them. You will have to cut the chilies in halves and deseed them. Take all the chopped tomatoes in a 5-litre pressure cooker and add garlic, ginger, red chilies, vinegar, raisins, salt, and sugar or stevia. Keep the flame low and start mixing them and as the tomatoes start to soften, you should switch off the gas. Allow the mixture to cool down and blend it well into a smooth puree. Strain the mixture into a large saucepan or pot. Your last step is to stir and dissolve the sodium benzoate in a cup of hot water and add it directly to your chutney. The home-made tomato chutney is ready to be served. Refrigerate it after use.

Meals - Check The Ideal Count In A Day

With the advancement of nutritional science, researchers have realized that less gap between meals means less amount of stored fat which in turn also helps in controlling blood sugar, boost metabolism and aids in weight management.

It has been proven that our blood sugar starts decreasing after 3 hours of consumption and the process of digestion completes after 4  hours.

After 5 hours we are ready to gobble up whatever comes in our way as the body is looking for a way to refuel. This may lead to consumption of high-calorie food.

Eating at regular intervals can save you from binging, keep your blood sugar level stable and help you stay energized. Also, digestion itself is work for the body and the activity leads to burning calories. However, one needs to be careful and not consume very high-calorie meals as that would increase the risk of chronic diseases.

Since everybody is different, there cannot be a set number of meals prescribed for everyone. It depends on when a person feels hungry and how that person would like to deal with it. But you need to understand your body's need for replenishment and provide the nourishment it requires.

Hence, according to your body's requirement, you should have small meals at short intervals which could range from six to eight in a day. If you wish to discuss any specific problem, you can consult a Dietitian/Nutritionist.
