Hello DR's, My TSH level was 11 during my 3rd month of pregnancy. I was medicated to have thyrox 2.5 and am having now at 6 months after delivery. I have three qs regarding this 1. I lost my baby due to trisomy 18. Will this thyroid not detected before pregnancy could cause this? 2. Due to need to continue the tablet even now? 3. Am taking it regularly, but for the past two days I feel a pain in throat, what can be reason?

I am rather surprised that thyroid testing was not done before pregnancy. Because it is now recommended that every female desirous of having a baby must get her thyroid test done. If tsh levels are high particularly in first trimester then embryonic development is definitely affected, causing congenital defects. Secondly during pregnancy if tsh is high there can be affection to fetal development, misscarriage or fetal death. So it is recommended that tsh levels should be maintained between 0.1 to 2 even before expected conception. Plus through out the pregnancy levels should be: 1st trimester 0.1 to 2.5, 2nd trimester 0.3 to 3 and 3rd trimester 0.3 to 3.5 milli units. If these levels exceed then above mentioned problems are a possibility.
