Urethra is the small tube which removes the urine from the body to the outside. Some people have scars in the urethra and some may even have tissue inflammation resulting in a narrow urethra. Such condition of narrowing of the urethra is called Urethral Stricture, which causes restriction in flow of urine.
Main reasons of developing urethral stricture are falling on the bicycle bar or getting hit near the scrotum. Other reasons for developing urethral stricture are radiation, surgeries, catheter insertion, and prostate surgery. People who have tumour near urethra, STIs and repeated urinary tract infections can develop urethral stricture.
Urethral stricture symptoms include weak urine flow, frequent urination, urethral discharge, pain while urinating, darkening of urine, and presence of blood or semen in urine. When the condition is serious there will be inability to urinate which is a serious condition which requires immediate attention of an urologist.
Anyone who experiences such symptoms should consult an urologist. The concerned urologist will undertake examination of the penis area. He will check for redness in the penis and any other symptoms like urine discharge or blood. Doctors will also perform tests like measuring the urine flow, checking the urine for blood discharge or bacteria, checking the size of urethral opening, tests for STIs like gonorrhoea and Chlamydia. Many surgical and non-surgical methods are available for widening the urethra and removing the urethral stricture. This can give relief to the patients suffering from the disorder.
