Scars on the skin are alterations in the deeper layers of the skin and the appearance of the epidermis. They are usually formed after an injury, burn, trauma or surgeries. Scars are a part of the body's natural healing mechanism after a trauma. Some major types of scars include keloid scars which extend beyond the original injury, contracture scars that are formed after a burn, hypertrophic scars which are similar to keloids but much smaller in size and acne scars which are formed as a result of acne. When a scar develops, both the epidermis and dermis are affected.
