Eye infection is a common type of a condition in which either one eye or both the eyes get affected by a bacterial or fungal infection. Eye infection is a very broad disorder altogether and it can be of various types and occur due to a wide variety of reasons. The signs of having an eye infection are pain, redness, watery eyes, discharges, loss of vision, vision damage, increased sensitivity to light, and such others. One of the best remedies of an eye infection is to hydrate the eyes using fluids like natural eye drops.
HOW IS EYE INFECTION DIAGNOSED?
Trying to self-diagnose an eye infection can delay effective treatment and potentially harm eyesight.
One of the conditions which worsen with passing age is related to vision. Eyes are one of the most complicated organs in the body. Some problems in the eye can be minor but some might be severe enough to cause vision loss. Some common eye disorders are discussed below:
A condition which damages the optic nerve of the eye and worsens over passing time, mostly due to accumulated pressure inside the eye, is known as Glaucoma. If this increase in eye pressure increases, this glaucoma leads to loss of vision that might be permanent. Glaucoma treatment is essential since if this condition is not treated, the glaucoma will lead to total blindness after few years.
i. Open angle glaucoma: This common form of glaucoma is also known as wide-angle glaucoma. Although the different structures seem normal, the fluid present in the eye is not able to flow through the trabecular meshwork properly, which is the drain of the eye.
ii. Angle closure glaucoma: This condition is also known as chronic or acute angle closure glaucoma or narrow angle glaucoma. The narrow angle formed between the cornea and the iris results in poor drainage and thus causes blockage. This leads to sudden accumulation of pressure in the eye.
Glaucoma symptoms include loss of vision, eye redness, nausea and vomiting. Glaucoma treatment involves microsurgery, eye drops and laser surgery.
The clouding of an individual’s natural lens lying behind the iris and the pupil is called cataract. This condition forms the major cause of vision loss and affect people usually above the age of 40. Cataracts can be of three different types:
i. Subcapsular cataract: This particular type of cataract occurs behind the lens. People with a higher intake of steroids and diabetic individuals are more susceptible to this.
ii. Nuclear cataract: This occurs usually within the center of the lens or the nucleus. This is primarily associated with aging.
iii. Cortical cataract: This form of cataract is found in the lens cortex. The lens cortex is a part of the lens that surrounds the central nucleus.
Common symptoms of cataracts include blurring of the vision. Colors may appear too dull or too bright and the same effect is felt for light. The symptoms vary according to the type of the cataract. The nuclear cataract causes a short lived improvement in an individual’s vision. This phenomenon is called the second sight. In contrast, subcapsular cataract fails to provide for symptoms unless fully developed.
3. Age Related Macular Degeneration
Age Related Macular Degeneration or AMD is an extremely painful and difficult condition which is caused due to the deterioration of the central part of the retinal regions, known as the macula. Macular degeneration even though the peripheral vision is restored, primary vision is disrupted. It largely causes problems in concentration.
4. Dry eye syndrome
Dry eye syndrome is a specific condition when the eyes are incapable of providing the adequate amount of moisture required. Dry eye syndrome causes the eyes to dry up and in turn leads to irritation and itchiness. People affected by this particular condition of the eye, experience blurred vision, swelling of the eye and more than average sensitivity to light. Their eyes dry up easily causing the eyes to redden easily and leaving a long lasting burning sensation.
