Hello, first of all pain is not the only criteria to conclude weather a filling or a root canal is required in the tooth, Sometimes you might have pain and still the tooth require just the filling and sometimes you dont have pain but tooth will go for root canal. yes it is called secondary caries, once you feel pain on that particular tooth,you may need to go for root canal .because once you get pain means it reaches root and even after pain subside on antibiotic it have a chances to get pain again in future. it is advisable for root canal
