Cancer Of Mouth: Treatment, Procedure, Cost and Side Effects

What is the treatment?

Skin whitening is the process by which people reduce the melanin pigment in the skin to give a whiter complexion. Those with dark complexion have more melanin and the quantity of melanin determines the colour of a person’s skin. Melanin is manufactured by cells called melanocytes. The melanin quantity of person’s skin depends upon the genetic buildup. The production of melanin is affected by exposure to the sun, the degree of damaged skin, and exposure to chemicals.

Often people take recourse to skin whitening methods to deal with problems such as freckles, age spots, scars, moles, acne, birthmarks and also by people who wish to have fair skin, especially those with a darker tone of skin. People use whitening or lightening products such as bleaching creams, fading creams, chemical peels and laser treatment. These products work by disturbing the tyrosinase enzyme which is instrumental for the melanin production and thereby reducing its amount in the skin. The melanocyte cells which manufacture melanin are situated at the very bottom of the skin’s epidermal layer. Sometimes the over-production of the melanin pigment could lead to various hyperpigmentation problems.

How is the treatment done?

The first step towards a skin whitening procedure would be to schedule an appointment with a dermatologist and tell him/her what kind of skin tone you have in mind. To get a clearer idea across it would be best if you carried a picture with you of the person with the desired skin tone that you have in mind. After discussing with your dermatologist, you may go and talk to the plastic surgeon. You can also show him/her the picture so that he/she knows what it is you exactly want. After consulting with both the dermatologist and plastic surgeon you decide on the option that you want based on your health, requirements and financial position- you can go for a skin bleaching treatment or something as expensive as a surgery. Aside from being extremely expensive skin whitening procedures are also very painful and you need to be prepared for both.

You need to plan out the recovery time after you complete your treatment; laser treatments and chemical peels take a few weeks and permanent skin whitening surgery takes more time. After treatment you need to take care of your skin by using certain maintenance products. Sunscreen is very important to prevent you from getting sunburns and also lower chances of your skin getting darker.

Who is eligible for the treatment? (When is the treatment done?)

Everyone is eligible for a skin whitening treatment.

Who is not eligible for the treatment?

People having a history of heart-related disorders, recurring fever or cold sores and a tendency to scar should avoid undergoing chemical peel treatment for skin whitening. Those with really dark skin are not recommended for deep chemical peel treatment as well.

Are there any side effects?

If you are undergoing laser whitening treatment you can expect to experience the following side effects such as bruising, skin dryness, sensitivity to sunlight, tightness, swelling, scarring, skin infections, skin texture difference, pigmentation, skin redness and irritation. Deep chemical peel treatments can cause permanent damage such as hyperpigmentation (skin darkening) or hypopigmentation (skin lightening). if you undergo very aggressive treatments to whiten your skin it may become raw and ooze forming crusts all over.

What are the post-treatment guidelines?

The post-treatment guidelines for skin whitening treatment include washing the concerned area with chemical free soaps and dabbing very gently. For your full recovery it is advised that you make use of certain maintenance products such as regularly apply aloe vera gel or petroleum jelly to give a soothing and cooling effect. A layer of scabs and crusts may form on the treated area so it is advised that you do not touch or pick these areas. Take painkillers to reduce swelling. Apply sun screen for at least a period of six months to prevent darkening or sunburn because the skin at this stage becomes extremely sensitive.

How long does it take to recover?

The time to recover depends on the type of treatment you undergo for skin whitening. If you go for non-ablative treatment methods then it may take only a day or two to recover. But if you go for surgery such as a laser one then it may take up to 2-3 weeks to recover, following which you will need to adhere to certain post-treatment guidelines to prevent darkening, irritation or sunburn.

What is the price of the treatment in India?

Cost of laser treatment varies somewhere between Rs. 30,000-60,000 in India.

The cost of skin whitening creams would range between 200 rupees to 3000 rupees.

Are the results of the treatment permanent?

Skin whitening creams only give you temporary results and do not have very lasting effects however, laser surgery as well as chemical peel treatment methods promise to give permanent solutions.

What are the alternatives to the treatment?

Alternatives to skin whitening creams and surgery comprise of home remedies such as application of face packs made at home from sandalwood, turmeric, milk or tomato, yoghurt, oatmeal or milk, lemon juice, honey or dried orange peels and yoghurt, etc.

Glutathione Skin Whitening: Does It Really Work?
Glutathione is one of the most powerful antioxidants in our body. This is gaining traction in terms of skin whitening treatment and achieve the desired pigmentation. With very less to no side-effect, Glutathione skin whitening is by far the most chosen whitening treatment. It is tropically administered through whitening pill or Glutathione cream. The skin whitening efficacy: There has been a widespread debate about the effectiveness of skin whitening treatment through glutathione. As per a study conducted by the NCBI, it was found that a period of 4 weeks of Glutathione treatment among a small number of participants exhibited positive results. There are a couple of ways in which Glutathione pills helps to whiten the skin. Glutathione ties up with Tyrosinase and blocks the pathway of the enzyme to produce melanin. The latter is the pigment that is responsible for skin color in the body. The second way in which Glutathione helps in skin whitening is by halting the activation of Tyrosinase. It does so by cutting down the free radicals in the body. It is the free radicals that produce tyrosinase in the first place. The latter in turn is responsible for an increased melanin count in the body. Skin health and Glutathione: There are many Glutathione pills out there. It is important to choose the right one for effective results. A Glutathione supplement containing compounds such as Liposomal Glutathione, acetyl glutathione, and L- glutathione etc. can not only enhance the complexion of the skin but improves skin health and quality. Glutathione is the most powerful antioxidant present in every cell of the human body. It helps in removing toxic, heavy metal, free radicals in the body. If not for this compound, the body cell cannot detoxify properly and there is a high likelihood of cell damage. Apart from this Glutathione supplement can effectively minimize the age spots and remove the signs of aging. It is equally beneficial in removing wrinkles, dark spots and other spot marks present in the body. What to expect from this form of skin treatment? Although this form of skin white treatment works without a shadow of a doubt. It is wise not to expect dramatic results overnight. The supplement or the cream takes a while to show the result. Since it binds with the internal hormone, the changes might take a while to show the results. After a couple of months, one can expect healthier and fairer skin. The body will also be free from harmful and chemical toxins. It is advised that a skin specialist or a medical professional is consulted before starting the pills or cream. If a person is undergoing skin medication, it might have to be stopped for a while.

How Black is Beautiful? 3 Reasons to Love Being Black!

How Black is Beautiful? 3 Reasons to Love Being Black!
Many Indians are crazy about fair skin and go to extreme lengths to achieve and maintain a fair complexion. The media bombards you daily with very catchy advertisements of creams, lotions, sunscreens and other unscientific products that claim to make your skin fairer. Do you know that your skin colour is darker for very good evolutionary and biological reasons and that medically speaking, it is good that you do not have very fair skin? Darker skin is adapted to sunlight and has increased quantity of a pigment called melanin. The more melanin you have, the darker your skin. And the safer you are! Melanin along with other factors, acts as a natural umbrella and prevents harmful radiation from entering your skin. These are just some of the reasons why black skin is safe and beautiful: You are less prone to sunburns: White skinned individuals often get painful, carrot-red or tomato-red inflamed sunburns on exposure to sunlight. Some individuals also get blistering sunburns requiring aggressive medical treatment to control the reaction. Your darker skin allows you to spend much longer time on the beach and you probably have never ever experienced any blister due to sunlight. You do not experience photo-ageing: Fine and deep wrinkles, broken blood vessels on the nose and cheeks, freckles, age spots and rough scaly spots called keratosis are commonly seen in white skinned individuals with long term sun exposure. These set of changes are called photo-aging. Because of natural sun protection, your Indian skin remains has less wrinkles and is smoother, even when exposed to the same amount of sunlight. You are less prone to skin cancers: Without melanin, you can imagine white skin as a transparent covering, which allows harmful UV light to penetrate through into the lower layers of the skin. This radiation causes damage to the DNA and a few cells may mutate to cause skin cancers, some of which are deadly. You are lucky that your natural umbrella blocks UV light effectively and cells in different layers of the skin suffer much less damage compared to white-skinned individuals. However, don t forget to see a dermatologist in case you see any new bump, or in case you see any change in(a)symmetry, border, color, diameter or evolution (ABCDE) of any existing moleon your skin. However, on the flip side, since your skin is effective in shielding you from sunlight, you are also prone to Vitamin D deficiency. Sunlight is required for the production of Vitamin D and darker skinned individuals are more prone to this deficiency. Talk to your dermatologist about this possibility. Sunscreens were developed to protect against sunburns and skin cancers and you probably do not need them as a routine, unless you work outdoors, on beaches or on mountains. Stay away from skin brightening creams, since many of them contain compounds which permanently damage your skin and organs. Make it a point to consult your dermatologist before putting any medication on your skin. Be proud and be happy that you have dark Indian skin.

Chemical Peels: Conditions They Treat, What to Expect!
Do you ever wish you could start all over and take better care of your skin? A chemical peel could give you that chance. Peels can dramatically reduce lines, wrinkles, acne scars, dark spots, and roughness caused by years of sun. A chemical peel is a solution applied to the face to remove the outermost layer or layers of skin. It's a technique used to improve the appearance of the skin on the face, neck or hands. A chemical solution is applied to the skin that causes it to exfoliate and eventually peel off. The new skin that grows in its place is softer, smoother and has fewer imperfections. The new skin is also temporarily more sensitive to the sun. There are three basic types of chemical peels: Superficial or Lunchtime Peel: Alpha-hydroxy acid or another mild acid is used to penetrate only the outer layer of skin to gently exfoliate it. The treatment is used to improve the appearance of mild skin discoloration and rough skin as well as to refresh the face, neck, chest or hands. Medium Peel: Glycolic or trichloroacetic acid is applied to penetrate the outer and middle layers of skin to remove damaged skin cells. The treatment is used to improve age spots, fine lines and wrinkles, freckles and moderate skin discoloration. Deep Peel: Trichloroacetic acid or phenol is applied to deeply penetrate the middle layer of skin to remove damaged skin cells. The treatment removes moderate lines, age spots, freckles and shallow scars. A thorough evaluation by a dermatologic surgeon is imperative before embarking upon a chemical peel. When is a chemical peel appropriate? Chemical peels are used to treat a number of conditions including: Pigmentation on face or body Tanning Dyschromias Fine Wrinkles Acne Acne marks and scars Dullness Aging skin Crow's feet Sagging skin Who should not opt for chemical peels? Generally, light-haired and fair skinned people are the best candidates for chemical peel. The procedure does not work as well on dark skinned patients. The procedure is not recommended for individuals with infections, active skin disease, cut or broken skin, or sunburns. Other contraindications include patients who are: Nursing or pregnant. Have taken Accutane in last six months. Have psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis or rosacea. Possible complications Temporary change in skin color, particularly for women on birth control pills, who subsequently become pregnant or have a history of brownish facial discoloration. Changes are transient and easy to take care of if taken care properly. Scarring Reactivation of cold sores A variety of chemical treatments can be used to exfoliate and rejuvenate the skin. Depending on the depth of treatment required, your surgeon may choose one of the following peels: Alpha-hydroxy acid peel (AHA) Trichloroacetic acid peel (TCA) Phenol peel Croton oil peel Aftercare and recovery Your dermatologist will discuss how long it will be before you can return to your normal level of activity and work. After surgery, you and your caregiver will receive detailed instructions about your postsurgical care, including information about: Normal symptoms you will experience Potential signs of complications

Ayurveda's Safe Facial Fairness and Pimple and Blemishes Care Approach

Ayurveda's Safe Facial Fairness and Pimple and Blemishes Care Approach
Facial skin fairness and desire to have acne-less and blemishes-less face has been a need of men and women (esp. young girls) since time immemorial. Modern market forces exploited this demand by selling chemicalized and synthetic facial creams without caring for side - effects to the users. Users also, in a quest to get quick remedies, became careless and ruined their skin tone and glow for years in most of the cases. Its a good sign now that people have understood the principles and benefits of Ayurveda and demand for these things have increased manifold in recent decade. But frankly speaking, it will benefit those perfectly and GUARANTEEDLY who follow the basic principles laid down for taking such treatment. Cleansing the intestines, detoxification of the body, controlling and modifying food habits, following the intake of medicines with permissible vehicles (Anupaana) i.e. some herbs to be taken with water, some with honey, some with turmeric or honey as per DOSHAS vitiation. Then timing of taking medicines such as before or after food or mid way of food intake are important. Avoiding certain foods or food combos are very important. In acne and blemishes salt is to be taken in restricted quantity -or not at all- to get rapid benefits. Similarly certain do's if advised such as taking certain herbs, foods etc, if instructed, should be followed such as Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia) or Neem decoction, turmeric milk etc should be honoured. Cleansing the intestines by soft laxatives and herbal bitters doing 'pittavirechan' (bile excretion), raktashodhan (blood purification) by certain simple Kwathas (Decoctions) of herbal combos, application of facial scubs and packs by 'Varnyadi Gana' herbs (classic herbal group of ten herbs advised in Ayurveda) are of unique importance. As we see in day to day interactions, people are not very careful about following the restrictions of food such as salt as told above or avoiding 'abhishyandi' (channel blockers such as curd) food. There's still no side effect but expected response period or degree of effect certainly goes down. However in Rasa Chikitsa (calcined metals and precious stones) 'Anupaana' gains more importance else some unwanted effects may be seen. So its better to follow Vaidya's (Ayurvedic Doctor's) instructions for any kind of Ayurvedic treatment. When you are using herbs for BEAUTY, it becomes more important to follow the instructions so that effects and perception are clearly visible in shortest possible time period.

Ultimate skin care powers of Turmeric | Skin Whitening

Ultimate skin care powers of Turmeric | Skin Whitening
In this beauty-conscious world we live in, many people, young women especially, try to do everything they can to improve their looks. A lot want whiter skin, and many people prefer using natural ways and means in achieving that. Luckily, using turmeric for skin whitening is a very effective method. All of us are born with different skin tones. That s a fact. This is because of the melanin presence in the epidermis, or top layer, of the skin. If there s more melanin in the skin, the darker the skin tone will be. Turmeric, or haldi, is a deep orange root from India, where it s one of the country s most widely used spices in food and on faces. Fun Fact: At Indian weddings, a turmeric paste is ritually applied to the bride from head-to-toe for a radiant glow. But what is it about turmeric that makes it so amazing for your skin?Simply put, it s an anti-oxidant as well as anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory. For those with sensitive skin conditions like rosacea or eczema, its anti-inflammatory properties are a godsend to help soothe flare-ups. If you suffer from acne, it contains curcumin, which works to fight the bacteria that plays a critical role in its formation. As if that s not enough, turmeric might be, basically, the fountain of youth. As an antioxidant, it helps fight off free radicals, which add signs to skin aging. explains Dr R K Aggarwal. Studies have also shown that ingestion of turmeric helps protect against the aging effects of sun-damage UV radiation and the formation of wrinkles and dark spots. Since giving turmeric a shot is a no-brainer at this point, the real question is how best to do it. Turmeric root can be boiled and made into a tea or the spice itself can be sprinkled onto teas, rice dishes, eggs, and vegetables, says Doctor. It adds a great warm color and has a subtle depth of flavor that enhances most food. Additionally, turmeric supplements can be taken, but then you d miss out on the great flavor.

There are many options to lighten skin tone including lasers, bleaching creams, and chemical peels. You should have a consultation with a board certified dermatologist to discuss which option is best for you. You have to consider though that no matter which treatment you decide to do that it will not produce a permanent result and that sun avoidance as well as the use of sunscreen (SPF 30 with zinc oxide) is required.  In order for your skin to look attractive and vibrant you need to make healthy lifestyle choices, and a great place to start is with the foods you eat such as including nuts, berries, tender coconut, cheese, avocado, oats, green vegetables, papayas, mangoes, peaches, pineapple, strawberries, squash; yellow, green and red peppers; tomatoes (raw green tomatoes are poison), can notaloupe, apricots, carrots, sweet potatoes, beets, dark green leafy veggies, seaweed (including brown seaweed called ecklonia cava. Drink plenty of water. Do meditation and yoga daily.
