How To Deal With Depression?

In simple words, depression means a common mental disorder.

Being depressed means the inability to think and feel to overcome any situation. Depression occurs due to the sadness, emptiness, loneliness, inability to feel which may make one feel unclear about the situation.

It states the disorders in the mood which occur due to the loss of joy, emptiness and persistent feeling of sadness. Depression makes you feel the fear of failure but at the same time it makes you have no urge to be productive.

Depression makes you care about everything simultaneously caring about nothing.

Depression is also about making new friends, but hating to be more socialized.

When you are depressed then you can't sleep at night properly and you may also feel tired. During depression, one can feel angry, alone, lose interest in everything, become an overthinker, irritable. It can cause headaches, mental stress, pain etc.

The following symptoms show the signs of depression. The following symptoms are:

  •    Slowed movement

  •    Changes in appetite

  •    Slowed speech

  •    Unintentional weight loss

  •    Guilty feeling

  •    Feelings of worthlessness 

  •    Difficulty thinking, concentrating, or making decisions

  •    Fatigue

  •    Weight gain

  •    Loss of energy

  •    A depressed mode

  •    Recurrent thoughts of death or suicide, or an attempt at suicide

  •    Reduced interest or pleasure in activities that a person previously enjoyed

  •   Sleeping too much or too little

  •   Thoughts of death, self harm, suicide

  •   Crying a lot

Causes of depression: 

The following are the causes of depression. They are as follows:

1. Medical problems:

Certain diseases such as insomnia, chronic illness, chronic pain, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, heart attack, and cancer may cause depression.

2. Early childhood trauma:

The childhood fear and trauma affect the body which causes stressful situations and fear which may lead to depression.

3. Structure of brain:

If your frontal lobe is less active, then it may increase the chances of depression. 

4. Use of alcoholic substances:

The use of substances such as wines, alcohol, etc can affect your health which can lead to depression. 

5. Chronic pain:

The people one who feel chronic physical pain or emotional pain for a long time are more likely to suffer from depression.

6. Hormonal changes:

The changes in the hormones of females i.e. estrogen and progesterone during different periods of time such as the menstrual cycle, menopause, etc may increase the chances of depression.

6. Imbalance of brain:

There may be an imbalance in the brain parts which may change the mood, sleep, thoughts, appetite, and behavior of the people which may lead to depression.

To deal with depression, you can take the small steps which will help in overcoming the depression:

1. Do meditation:-

Meditation is a practice in which a person uses a technique such as mindfulness, or focusing the mind on a particular object, thought or activity to train attention and awareness and achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm and stable state. If you do Meditation, you can get out of the depression easily.

2. Exercise regularly:-

By doing the exercise you can get out of the depression. Exercise helps in reducing stress, irritability, etc.

3. Eat healthy foods:-

Eating healthy food and eating the food on the proper time can help in reducing depression. You can easily deal with depression if you take a proper amount of food at the proper time.

4. Get a reasonable amount of sleep each night:-

Sleeping properly daily can help in reducing depression. 

5. Don't sit alone:-

If you sit alone, automatically the stress level increases. More and more negative feelings and thoughts come into the mind which increases depression. So, if you avoid sitting alone then it automatically reduces depression.

6. Be in the present:-

Don't think about the past which may increase depression. Live in the present. If you live in the present and think positively, you can overcome depression easily.

7. Do a creative activity:-

By doing the creative activity, you can learn new things. Depression can be avoided by doing a creative activity. If you involve yourself in a creative activity, it helps in reducing depression.

8. Set the goals or work towards the goal:- 

The goals should be set on which you must work. Instead of setting a long list of tasks, set small goals to achieve first. The accomplishment of the small goals first can provide a proper sense of control with the help of motivation. After completing the small goals then think about the larger goals. In this way, you can get the list of the achievements of the goals. This helps in overcoming depression.

9. Reward the efforts:-

All the set goals are to be recognized and rewarded. No matter whether they are small goals or larger goals. After achieving the goals, give your best to recognize it. You should start celebrating your each and every goal. If you start thinking about the goals which are not achieved, then you become depressed. So think about the goals which are achieved and reward it first. It may help you in overcoming depression.

10. Start doing the things you enjoy:-  

Depression makes you feel inactive or mentally disturbed. You don't feel interested in doing the things you don't like anymore. So, start doing the things which you like or which give you happiness. If you start doing the things you enjoy, it helps in reducing depression and also helps you to face depression.

11. Have a look around the environment:-

Environment means the surroundings where we live. Our environment is a sign of peace and harmony. There are many things around us that can directly have an impact on a person's mood. Nature means the trees, clouds, stars, sun, etc. If you spend more time with nature, it makes you feel more peaceful and helps in reducing depression. It gives you the ability to deal and overcome depression.

12. Spending time with the family:- 

Spending time with the family or with your loved ones can help in curing depression. Sharing your problems with your family can reduce mental stress, and negative thoughts, make you feel better, etc.

13. Create a proper schedule:-

Sometimes improper routine can make you feel depressed. Due to the improper routine, you are not able to achieve the goals. This can make you feel demotivated which leads to depression. So, make a proper schedule and work according to it. It will provide confidence and will help you in dealing with depression.
