What is the remedy about?

There are a series of home remedies available which can help in reducing the ramifications of a runny nose. For example, salt water helps in alleviating the inflammation and irritation that accompanies a runny nose. It helps in clearing the runny nose and nasal passages which remain stagnated with mucus. For this remedy, you will have to mix two teaspoons of table salt along with 2 cupfuls of lukewarm and distilled water. Now with your head tilted backward, add two drops of this solution into each nostril. Inhale it at a slow pace so that the solution reaches the interior part of the nasal passages. When you blow your nose, the excess mucus along with the solution would come out and relieve you from a runny nose. Steam is another of the most versatile remedies for treating the nasal problems. It assists in clearing out a runny nose by shedding off excess mucus that leads to irritation and discomfort. You can add a few drops of any menthol oil or eucalyptus oil into a bowl of hot water and then drape your head with a towel. Now you will have to inhale the steam for about 10 minutes and blow your nose so that the mucus is expelled out. Turmeric acts as a form of antidote for some health conditions including a runny nose. It contains high amounts of antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties which help in treating a runny nose. There are numerous processes of taking turmeric, and you can choose the one that suits you the most. Mustard oil also contains high amounts of antibiotic, anti-viral, anti-histamine, anti-microbial, and anti-bacterial properties. It contains a significant amount of isothiocyanate which helps in fighting off fungal infection and glucosinolate which fights off the microbes leading to a runny nose. There are numerous other home remedies for alleviating runny nose including garlic, ginger, eucalyptus oil, basil leaves, honey, cinnamon, horseradish and onion among others. There are various ways in which you can consume these ingredients without harming their efficacy.

Are there any side effects?

The home remedies for a runny nose as a whole doesn’t have any side effects, but each ingredient can cause discomfort and complications in different persons. Therefore, it is important to consider each option and choose one wisely. For instance, some people have bloating problems with garlic and onion, and therefore, it is crucial to avoid such as ingredients. Eucalyptus and menthol oil tend to worsen the cold and make the symptoms severe. For such people taking a salt solution and chewing small pieces of ginger can be the best option. Also, some people have restrictions about consuming mustard oil due to allergies and cardiac health. Likewise, there are innumerable numbers of remedies for a runny nose, but all of them are not meant for everyone. You must consider your individual condition and allergies before choosing any ingredient for treating a runny nose. It is also important to check whether the ingredient is fresh. If ginger or garlic is stored for an extended period, then these items tend to lose their effectiveness. You should make it a habit of washing your hands with some disinfecting cleanser and water very often so that the risk of being infected with cold viruses reduces considerably. Also, practice coughing or sneezing while covering the nose and mouth with a tissue or the upper sleeves so that you don’t spread germs. Experts suggest that you should avoid touching your mouth or nose or eyes too often when having a runny nose.

How long does it take to recover?

A runny nose accompanied by a sore throat are the most common symptoms of a cold which are often followed by sneezing and coughing. It takes about 7 to 10 days to get rid of all these symptoms with the effective home remedies. This is one of the most common ailment that compels numerous children to miss their school and adults their work. But there is an exception with people who have chronic cold problems or those who tend to catch a cold even if they have a glass of cold water. There is no training or expertise required following the home remedies for a runny nose but you need to consult an expert if the symptoms get worse. In such case, the doctor would evaluate your overall health condition and prescribe antibiotics or other medications. But in most cases, the simple home based cure would be effective. For reaping the maximum benefit a general study on the right way of usage, the number of times the procedure has to be repeated, is there any dosage and so on could be useful. Sit comfortably: When your nose starts bleeding, you should sit in a comfortable position. Do not stand or lie down because in these positions, blood may pass on to your throat which could be harmful. Tilt your face forward and let a piece of cloth soak in all the blood. 2. Hold the nose: During nose bleeding, one should hold and pinch the nose for at least 10 minutes continuously. If it still doesn?t stop bleeding then hold it for 5-7 minutes more. Holding or pinching the nose is necessary because bleeding can stop if direct pressure is put on nose for a longer time. 3. Apply ice: Applying ice can be a great way of instantly stopping nose bleeding. Ice usually compresses and tightens the blood vessels because of which bleeding stops. Ice should preferably be applied on cheeks and nose. Alternatively, you can keep the ice in your mouth also for short intervals. Nose bleeding can be prevented by taking the following measures : 1. Elevate the nose while resting. Take 2-3 pillows while sleeping. 2. Do not blow or scratch your nose forcefully. 3. Keep your blood pressure in control because it will help in preventing nose-bleeding to a great extent. 4. Avoid smoking because it delays the healing process. 5. Make sure the room you sleep in isn?t dry. Keep a check on humidity of your room. 6. Need to take special care in winters because the nose membrane gets dry mostly in winters. 7. Drink plenty of water and citrus food to keep your nose moist and avoid milk, wheat and fried food. 8. Do not overuse cold and allergy medicines.

Avoid powder, strong smell (lotion, cream, antiseptics, oils) smoke, use normal saline nasal drops. Don't put oil on the head. If it continues with fever, cough, green yellow colour discharge then see a pediatrician.
