Diet Chart For high uric acid

Last Updated: Dec 09, 2022

About

Topic Image

Uric acid is produced from the natural breakdown of the body's cells and from the foods we eat. Most of the uric acid is filtered out by the kidneys and passes out of the body in urine. A small amount passes out of the body in the stool. But, if excessive uric acid is being produced or if the kidneys are not able to remove it from the blood normally, the level of uric acid in the blood increases.

High levels of uric acid in the blood can cause solid crystals to form within joints. This causes a painful condition called gout. If gout remains untreated, these uric acid crystals can build up in the joints and nearby tissues, forming hard lumpy deposits called tophi. High levels of uric acid may also cause kidney stones or kidney failure.

It is necessary to follow a high uric acid diet that includes:

  1. Eat fresh fruit, vegetables, whole wheat products, and pulses (high in purine) every day.
  2. Eat no more than 100g of meat, sausages, fish, and poultry a day.
  3. Eat low-fat food. The consumption of high-fat foods encourages weight gain.
  4. Drink at least two liters of low-calorie fluids a day. Recommended fluids are water, tea, and fruit juice.
  5. The high uric acid diet helps in controlling the levels of uric acid and maintains the health of organs.

Food Items To Limit

  1. Red Meat: Red meat is one of the certain foods that deliver more uric acid than other foods in your diet. However, poultry and white meats, like pork are also high in uric acid, so it is best to keep your intake of meats and wild meat to an overall minimum.
  2. Organ Meat: Like white and red meat, organ meats also deliver a high amount of uric acid. Seafood: seafood and fish are off limits during gout flare-ups because they are other main sources of uric acid (purines) in your diet.
  3. Beer & Alcohol: beer is twice as bad for people with gout than seafood and meats. That is because it will raise the production of uric acid levels in the body and make the body more difficult to remove excess uric acid.
  4. Drinks High in Sugar: These drinks deliver high fructose corn syrup that will stimulate the production of uric acid.
  5. Cauliflower: Cauliflower is a bland vegetable and is rich in uric acid. They also have nutrients that can reduce insulin resistance which plays an important role in controlling gout flare-ups.
  6. Protein-rich vegetarian sources like soya, paneer, and dals can also increase the tendency of increasing the blood uric acid levels.
