The moment you think of weight gain, muscle gain, whatever is your workout or diet intake, does not justify taking a protein supplement.
You cannot gain weight by just adding a protein source to your diet.
Weight or muscle gain needs additional calories through a balance of carbohydrates, proteins, healthy fats and exercise.

Protein supplements should be taken only if you are not able to get enough protein from natural food sources. If you think your food lacks protein, then you can take a scoop of protein after running.

Side effects depends on your choice which product you are taking.Before having any kind of supplement you should have knowledge about the product.Try to include more protein in your diet and avoid supplements if it not required.Get your kidney functional tests done first and then realize do u really need it .
