Dental sealants: protection shield for children oral health

10% of children are prone to dental cavities, as it is one of the most common problems worldwide. Children need specialized pediatric care & their parents have to play an important role to take care of their children's dental health.

Cavities occur when children takes more sugar in their diet which forms plaque or translucent bacterial on the tooth surface. It destroys the tooth enamel. Once you lose tooth enamel, it can't be recovered.

Many studies showed that from childhood to adulthood, children have many dental problems and the most common is cavities. As we can do, many cure through dental visits, good oral hygiene, fluoridated tooth paste which have minimum quantity of fluoride, flossing, mouth rinse.

After all the precautions, children still have cavities because some have low immunity so response to bacteria is more prone on their oral cavity. When your child eats and drinks, these bacteria create acids, which can dissolve the protective layer beneath the retained plaque. It removes minerals from the enamel, which if left untreated causing a cavity. Parents often have questions about how to take care of their children's teeth.

For good oral hygiene of children, using dental sealants as protection shield to keep the teeth healthy. Dental sealant is a plastic material that is applied to the teeth, hardens them, and provides a barrier against plaque and other harmful substances. They are usually placed on the chewing (occlusal) surface of the permanent back teeth, the molars and premolars & protect them from cavities. It works like rain coat for tooth against cavities.

Dental sealant procedure:

First, polishing the surface of the tooth to remove plaque and food debris from the pit and fissure surfaces.
Next, isolate and dry the tooth. Then, etch will apply on the surface of the tooth, rinse off the etching material and dry the tooth.
Applying the sealant on the surface of the tooth with a brush; a self-curing light will be used for about 30 seconds to bond the sealant to the tooth surface.
Then, evaluating the dental sealant and check the occlusion. Once the sealant as hardened it becomes a hard plastic coating, and child can chew on the tooth again.

Many studies have shown that dental sealant are effective in helping to prevent decay on chewing (occlusal) surfaces for last many years. If necessary, it is also possible to place a new dental sealant on the tooth. Dental sealant is a painless treatment without drilling or numbing medications. Sealants are more common in children because of the new growth of permanent teeth.

Pollution - How Is It Worse For Children?

Pollution - How Is It Worse For Children?

The term pollution means introduction of harmful and unwanted contaminants into our environment. Due to the borderless nature of our atmosphere and oceans, contamination at a small level can have a huge impact that to in places which are nearby and one of the best examples of this is crop stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana which is a major contributor to Delhi smog. Pollution is a slow poison and is deleterious to the life of all beings, including plants, animals, and humans. With the rise in the pollution levels, no one can escape the harmful effects of the same on health. Though pollution poses a great threat to everyone, it is the children who are most effected, let us read on to know the reasons

Why are children more susceptible to pollution?

  • The lung function, immune system, and metabolic systems in children are not fully developed and functional which makes it difficult for the body to fight these pollutants.
  • Children breathe in more air per kilogram of their body weight than adults, so they take in more pollutants per breath.
  • Children are not only more active but also have a faster breathing rate than that of adults. This means that they take in more environmental toxins and at a much faster rate.

Understanding the effects of pollution on children’s health

  • Exposure of pregnant women to polluted air is strongly associated with premature birth, low birth weight, and intrauterine growth retardation. Low birth weight babies and premature infants are more prone to developmental delays and other disorders.
  • Exposure to certain pollutants like carbon monoxide and ozone are linked with septal and valvular defects in the heart of a child.
  • There is a strong association between particulate pollution and symptoms like wheezing and bronchitis in both adults and children. This is the main reason why there is an increased prevalence of Asthma in children in urban areas. Research has shown that high level of pollutants in air cause deficits in lung function growth.
  • The immune system which protects the body from infections and germs is not fully developed in children. Pollutants are known to cause suppression of immunity in small children making them more prone to infections.
  • Children need sufficient Vitamin D for strong and healthy bones. Vitamin D is known as sunshine vitamin and is synthesized in the body on exposure to UVB rays of the sun. Increased particulate components in the air reduce the amount of UVB radiation reaching the ground level. More than 60% children are Vitamin D deficient and require supplements orally.
  • The exhaust of gasoline and diesel is known to emit carcinogens which are thought to play a role in the development of leukemia (blood cancer) in children.
  • The nervous system is a target for many environmental pollutants. Exposure to these pollutants can lead to neurological deficits and delays in development. Some of these effects are irreversible and long-lasting.

Unfortunately, with urbanization and increased population, the levels of particulate pollutants in the air are increasing at an alarming rate. The problem of pollution needs to be addressed immediately, until then it is best to keep the children indoor and take necessary precautions and keep children safe from exposure to the pollutants.

How To Deal With Stubborn Or Obstinate Children?

How To Deal With Stubborn Or Obstinate Children?

While children can light up your life with joy and laughter, sometimes they can appear to be monsters with their temper tantrums and their stubbornness. Stubborn or obstinate children can be very difficult to deal with and could end up disrupting your life as well. However, there are a few techniques that mental health professionals have suggested that can help you deal with your stubborn and obstinate child. These are mentioned here briefly –

  1. Hear Them Out: It’s often the case that children tend to be stubborn or obstinate and start screaming when they think they weren’t heard. This makes them feel helpless and thus forces them to bottle up and then take out their frustration by either not doing what you are telling them to do or doing exactly the opposite of that. The best treatment in this scenario is to hear them out and patiently try to resolve their problems.

  2. Ensure They Follow Your Example: If one or both of the parents are extremely stubborn, then this would translate into a stubborn kid as well. Doctors have said that obstinacy is often in the genes. Also, environmental influence is a big deal for them as well. Ensure that you are flexible enough with your partner and the child picks up on it.

  3. Teaching Kids About Give And Take: This is a very important lesson in life as it teaches kids to choose priorities. If you teach your kid to always give, then it sends a message that putting themselves second is the best option. However, if he or she is always fighting to take first priority, it may lead to too many conflicts later. Thus it is best to teach them that it is okay to fight for what is yours but also let others have their way sometimes. This attitude will help them develop a balanced attitude and lessen their obstinacy.

  4. Give Them The Illusion Of Choice: Children are very malleable when it comes to their minds and you can use this trick to do certain things that make them appear they have some control when they actually may not. For example, if they are unwilling to go to sleep, you can say that you cannot make them sleep, but they have to stay in bed. Your child would then automatically fall asleep after some time due to boredom which would end up serving your purpose.

  5. Use Scolding Or The Parent Card As A Last Resort: If any of the techniques mentioned don’t work, then you can scold or warn your kid with consequences which may result in capitulation. For example, if your child is not willing to come back and study, then try and stop them from whatever they were doing and make them sit with their books. This lets them know that certain areas you will absolutely not compromise on and they will understand the limits better. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Psychiatrist.

Health Tips For Healthy Children

You can help your child develop healthy habits early in life that will bring lifelong benefits. As a parent, you can encourage your kids to evaluate their food choice and physical activity habits. Here are some tips and guidelines to get you started.

Be a good role model- you don't have to be perfect all the time, but if kids see you trying to eat right and getting physically active, they'll take notice of your efforts. You'll send a message that good health is important to your family.

Keep things positive- kid&'s don't like to hear what they can't do, tell them what they can do instead. Keep it fun and positive. Everyone likes to be praised for a job well done. Celebrate successes and help children and teens develop a good self-image.

Get the whole family moving- plan times for everyone to get moving together. Take walks, ride bikes, go swimming, garden or just play hide-and-seek outside. Everyone will benefit from the exercise and the time together.

Be realistic- setting realistic goals and limits are key to adopting any new behaviour. Small steps and gradual changes can make a big difference in your health over time, so start small and build up.

Limit tv, video game and computer time- these habits lead to a sedentary lifestyle and excessive snacking, which increase risks for obesity and cardiovascular disease. Limit screen time to 2 hours per day.

Encourage physical activities that they'll really enjoy- every child is unique. Let your child experiment with different activities until they find something that they really love doing. They'll stick with it longer if they love it.

Pick truly rewarding rewards- don't reward children with tv, video games, candy or snacks for a job well done. Find other ways to celebrate good behaviour.

Make dinnertime a family time -when everyone sits down together to eat, there's less chance of children eating the wrong foods or snacking too much. Get your kids involved in cooking and planning meals. Everyone develops good eating habits together and the quality time with the family will be an added bonus.

Make a game of reading food labels -the whole family will learn what's good for their health and be more conscious of what they eat. It's a habit that helps change behaviour for a lifetime.

Stay involved -be an advocate for healthier children. Insist on good food choices at school. Make sure your children's healthcare providers are monitoring cardiovascular indicators like bmi, blood pressure and cholesterol. Contact public officials on matters of the heart. Make your voice heard.
