Dengue fever occurs due to the bite of the Aedes mosquito which is infected with a dengue virus. The mosquito gets infected when it bites an infected person. It cannot be directly spread by direct blood contact. The symptoms of Dengue fever can be misdiagnosed as a viral infection or flu. If Dengue fever goes undiagnosed for a long time, it can be extremely fatal and can even cause death. Dengue fever can escalate to dengue hemorrhagic fever which is characterized by enlargement of the liver, bleeding from the gums & nose, damage to the blood vessels and lymph nodes, high fever and failure of the circulatory system. This is also known as dengue shock syndrome (DSS). People who have an extremely weak immune system are at a higher risk of developing dengue shock syndrome (DSS).
Till date no medications have been discovered which can completed cure the infection. Pain, headache, and discomfort caused by the fever can be controlled by consuming pain relievers and antibiotics. Ibuprofen and aspirin should be avoided because it can cause uncontrollable bleeding. It is advisable to get yourself admitted in the hospital if you experience symptoms of Dengue fever.
