Aphakia: Treatment, Procedure, Cost and Side Effects

How is the treatment done?

Aphakia is mostly common to adult people, especially for the person suffering from cataract, but it also produce effect in children and infants. Aphakia denotes to the condition of the eye that exist without lens. The importance of lens is inevitable in order to have a clear vision. It is situated behind the iris, the part that is responsible to contract and expand depending on the light that reaches it.

One of the most common cause of aphakia is Cataract. This disease make the eyes look milky and leads to blurred vision. This situation makes it harder for the lens to reflect the light that reaches the retina and thus resulting in cloudy vision. Cataract is caused when protein gather together around the lens. More than 24.4 million American people suffer from Cataract considered they are above 40 in age, as propagated by American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Genetics are also one of the cause of Aphakia. Some of the infants are born without lens. This is either a developmental drawback or genetic mutation that does not implants the lens successfully.

Another cause of Aphakia can be severe injuries that leads to destroy or detachment of the lens inside the eye.

However, some of the symptoms of aphakia are milky or blurred vision, focus is lost, farsightedness, colour of any object appearing faded.

Nowadays, one of the most preferred treatment procedure is intraocular lens implantation. This process eliminates all drawbacks of spectacles and lens. The lens are allowed to implant in the capsular bag.

In case of surgery, the damaged lens are removed and replaced by the artificial lens. This is done by conducting a local anaesthesia and takes less than 1 hour.

A whole new treatment method of Aphakia is refractive surgery.

Who is not eligible for the treatment?

A person suffering from Aphakia is eligible for this treatment. In other words, if you experience any unusual symptom that indicates Aphakia by any means, you are surely to undergo treatment.

Are there any side effects?

If you do not have any problem with your lens, you do not need this treatment.

There are several disadvantage of using a spectacle. The images are likely to get magnified, whereas the field of vision decreases. Prismatic effect due of spectacle is also a drawback.

Lens are often considered more costly and cannot be afforded by all. However, there are other complications related to use of lens on a regular basis.

On the other hand, surgery has its own complications.
