Acne and pimples mostly occur due to hormonal changes occurring in the body. They are most prominent among teenagers undergoing hormonal transition. The growth hormones become ultra active and the oil glands present in the skin produce more. The glands present under hair follicles are infected and get inflamed, resulting in pimples. Acute Acne - Why It Happens And How To Treat It

One of the skin’s main functions is protection, and one of the ways it does that is by producing sebum. During teenage and early adolescent years, there is a release of excessive sexual hormones leading to excessive sebum production. This along with dead skin build up and bacteria clogs the pores, leading to accumulation of sebum within the skin layers and formation of blackheads, whiteheads and other forms of pimples. In people with naturally oily skin, this can be a major problem, as they may devlop larger and severe acne called nodulo cystic acne which may leave scars when healed. Mild gels or lotions like tretinoin and adapalene are useful in controlling acne.

Causes:

  1. Hormonal disorder.
  2. Other causes like touching our face without washing hands, using cosmetics not suitable for our skin type and comedogenic cosmetics, improper cleansing of brushes used for make up all agrravate acne and should be taken care of.
  3. In girls, correlation with menstrual cycles, pregnancy, and polycystic ovaries,  indicating an association with increased hormone levels.

Management: As it is easy to identify if you are prone to developing acne, steps should be taken to avoid developing acne or reducing its severity once they appear.

  1. Touching acne is a strict no-no. There is a great tendency to keep picking at it, but this should be avoided as the infection can spread to other unaffected areas.
  2. Using a cold towel or soft cotton cloth can help in soothing the area
  3. Ice cubes can also be used on the acne. This will also reduce blood supply and curtail increase in severity
  4. Acne is proven to be an indication of stress, and so stress management is very essential.
  5. Keep calm by various methods – meditation, music, yoga, exercise
  6. A regular exercise routine also is very helpful. The sweating during the exercise helps in clearing up the pores and keeping the skin clean. Sebum is more often cleared out this way, leading to reduced acne
  7. Lifestyle (sleep and diet): A healthy eating pattern with reduced oily foods and sugars and more amounts of fresh foods is highly helpful. A good amount of sleep is also beneficial for overall skin health.
  8. Garments which come in touch with facial skin like pillow covers should be washed with gentle soap
  9. Regular skin care routine should be maintained including frequent washing, regular moisturising, and periodic exfoliating.
  10. Avoid too many chemicals and adhere to a regimen using as many natural substances as possible.
  11. Mild gels or lotions like tretinoin, tazarotene, and adapalene are useful in controlling acne
  12. Topical antibiotics like clindamycin or erythromycin combined with benzoyl peroxide may also be used if more severe
  13. Birth control pills are also used to regulate hormonal levels in some women.
  14. Scars can be treated with laser light therapy, dermabrasion, chemical peels, or steroid injections
  15. Remember that acne is a part of growing up, and will naturally reduce after the growing years.

Visit your dermatologist to make sure that acne not severe as they can leave unsightly pigmentation and scars.

Dermatological Treatment Options For Acne Scars!

Acne scars are caused when a pimple or cyst is popped and broken leaving a layer of damaged skin behind. Acne (pimples) are caused by the excess oil, dead skin, and bacteria blocking the skin pores causing it to swell.

Causes of Acne(pimples):

Acne and acne scars can be caused due to the following reasons:

In some cases, dairy products can worsen the condition. Simple tips to prevent scarring Wrong use of cosmetics which are comedogenic (clog pores)

Acne scars can be categorized into three types:

  1. Ice Pick scars which are small but have deep pits.
  2. Boxcar scars have sharp edges, these can be shallow or deep
  3. Rolling scar have a wavy look as they are wide and shallow.

Some superficial acne scars fade with time to a very small extent. However, in case of majority deep scars the stigma remains for lifetime

Tips to Prevent Acne scars

  1. Reduce ocurrence of acne breakouts (pimples)
  2. Don’t pick or squeeze pimples or acne as they can get inflamed. This inflammation can cause the bacteria to go further into the skin which would result in deeper scars.
  3. Do not use of harsh cosmetic products as some products can increase the risk of acne and scarring.
  4. Non-comedogenic, non-toxic, paraben-free, products free from irritants, synthetic dyes and colours should be used.
  5. Getting enough sleep is important and necessary for the body to produce collagen which is a protein necessary for skin elasticity. Sleep also helps the body and skin to repair itself.

Treatment of Acne Scars
Acne scars can be treated to regain your smooth skin and confidence back. After accessing your scars a good dermatologist can suggest a proper treatment plan that suits your condition. Most of these treatments can be performed as an outpatient procedure. Some of them are:

  1. Fractional Microneedle Radiofrequency: This treatment delivers radiofrequency energy to deeper layer of skin and stimulates repair and formation of new collagen in the dermis. The procedure has minimum downtime and is safe for all skin types and colours. It is very effective to treat acne scars.
  2. Laser Skin resurfacing: Where the damaged skin is removed to help new skin to grow. The damaged skin can be removed by the use of a laser. However, it has a downtime after treatment.
  3. Fillers: In this procedure, the doctor would inject a filler such as a collagen or fat into the damaged area. This helps the skin to become smooth.
  4. Dermaroller: Also known as micro-needling, is a procedure where tiny needles are rolled over the skin to stimulate collagen to grow.

A skin doctor or dermatologist would help you choose the right treatment plan depending on the type of your skin and severity of acne scars

Know The Top Derma Treatments For Acne Scar Removal!

Acne scars look bad and often interfere with your bright looks, as they make you feel embarrassed and unfresh. You use more makeup to cover them or avoid going out in order to hide them. However, instead of hiding your face or the scars, you may try these treatment options to remove the scars instead and feel brighter and better.

  1. Chemical peels: This method involves the application of a chemical peel on the skin. The acid in it removes the superficial skin layer to improve the appearance of the scar. This works well on lighter scars, and a licensed medical practitioner, nurse or cosmetologist can do this procedure.
  2. Dermabrasion and Microdermabrasion: This technique involves using a high-speed brush on the skin to polish the portion of the scar and make that part of the skin even, so that the scar looks lighter. If your skin doctor feels that you don't need serious dermabrasion, then he may use a microdermabrasion where small crystals are sprayed onto the skin surface to remove the skin cells over the scar and improve appearance.
  3. Fillers: Fillers are used on the skin which gets depressed due to the acne or scars. There are some binding materials like collagen or Hyaluronic acid, which can be injected through an injection, and this keeps the skin smooth, scar free and elevated for some time after which the injection has to be repeated. This has to be a continuous treatment until your skin starts to appear normal again.
  4. Retinoid creams: The retinoid creams are especially beneficial on scars if applied patiently for a prolonged period. These creams come with little side effects like burning, drying or peeling of the skin, but over a medium to long-term application, all scars do get removed.
  5. Laser treatment: A combination of a few types of laser treatments or just one type depending on the acne stage or redness is used. This smoothens the skin and removes the acne scars by removing skin cells from the area.
  6. Punch Excisions and Skin grafting: This is a surgical technique. The acne scar can be removed by cutting a portion of the skin, and removing it. Normally, this procedure is combined with skin grafting, where the hole created by the acne is filled up either through stitches, or through grafting of the skin. This is actually the most invasive process to remove scars and only done when you have a serious, permanent and stubborn scar which can't be effectively removed by other techniques.

Acne - Everything You Should Know!

Acne is a condition that affects many people including teenagers and women during their menstruation period. It is characterized by red eruptions that are usually filled with oil, secreted by overactive oil glands in the hair follicles. So what else should you know about acne?

Here are six things you probably did not know about this condition:

  1. Clogged Pores:  Acne signifies clogged or blocked pores that are filled with oil and dead skin cells that have not been cleaned out completely. This mixture of oil and dead skin cells blocks the pores, and ends up creating an eruption of red sores called acne and pimples. There is a chance that bacteria may have joined these two substances as well.
  2. Over Treating the Skin: The worst thing that you can do is to touch, pick or even apply too many harsh chemicals to your skin during an acne breakout. These things can actually make the problem worse, and even create scars in the long run. The constant use of cleansers and moisturizers can also have a harsh effect on the skin, due to perfume and chemicals present in such products.
  3. Exfoliation: Using a salicylic acid wash or cleanser first thing in the morning will help in exfoliation, which is a good way to clear those dead skin cells from your skin. This will speed up the process of acne treatment as well, by clearing the pores. Also at night, the use of a medicated cream that contains benzoyl peroxide will help in killing the bacteria, so that there is no infection.
  4. Two Weeks Notice: Trying new products to treat acne is a great idea. But give every new product at least two weeks before you write it off. Usually, any good product will take at least that much time to affect the acne, and clear the pores in an effective way. So before you start changing cleansers and creams every other day, remember to use the two week thumb rule.
  5. Menstrual Cycle: Acne, more often than not, happens about five days before and a few days after the monthly menstrual cycle. So watch out for hormonal imbalances, which can cause acne and pimples. Avoid stress around this time too.
  6. Dermatologist: Visit a dermatologist if regular cleaning and over the counter creams are not working. Persistent acne may turn into infection. Remember to ask your dermatologist for an oil reducing formula too.

Acne is a skin problem that should be treated the right way.

What Is Acne And What Are Its Causes?

Among one of the most common skin conditions that affect many people all over the world is Acne. It is not a harmful or a dangerous condition, but is usually a cosmetic problem and may also sometimes be a symptom of underlying conditions.

What is Acne and what are its causes?

Human skin has follicles or pores in them through which hair comes out. The accumulation of a substance known as sebum within the pores of the human skin can sometimes clog these pores. When this accumulates, dead skin cells also get stuck in it and results in a swelling, which takes the form of a pimple like a crest due to bacterial infections. This condition is most prevalent among adolescents due to rapid hormonal changes in the body, although many adults and pre-adolescents have also reported this problem.

Here are some common issues and lifestyle factors which make you prone to acne.

  1. Hormonal imbalance– This is probably the most common reason cited for acne as adolescents tend to be afflicted by this problem. In many cases acne goes away on its own after sometimes although in other cases it does stay. In adults, especially women it has been noticed that certain hormonal changes in the body may act as acne triggers. Some of the examples of hormonal imbalances may be:

    • PMS or period related triggers in adults and adolescent women

    • High testosterone levels in women

    • Excessive androgen in men and women

    • Hormonal problems due to PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) and others

    • Taking medicines or steroids that may cause hormonal changes

  2. External factors such as using too much makeup – Excessive use of cosmetic products can cause issues within the skin by blocking the pores within the skin may induce acne, even if you  do not have sebum related problems.

  3. DietResearch has proved that excessive oil consumption as well as having foods rich in fat can cause acne problems. Moreover, if you consume iodine in large quantities or for a long time, it results in irritation of the skin pores giving rise to acne.

  4. Certain medications and drugs - Consumption of specific over the counter medicines like the ones containing bromide and use of recreational drugs like marijuana and cocaine can lead to the occurrence of acne as side effects.

  5. Genetics - Certain genetic factors may also be responsible for someone being more prone to acne than others.

  6. Diet - Consumption of high glycemic index food (food items which release glucose rapidly in blood) also aggravates acne.

  7. Medications - Use of over the counter creams/ointments containing topical corticosteroids may also result in acne.
