15 Healthy Living Tips to Prevent Illness and Disability

In today's world, being healthy is like achieving a milestone. Nowadays, diseases such as cancer, heart problems, abnormal blood pressure, diabetes, etc are increasing tremendously. Staying healthy nowadays is a great task but you can introduce a few changes in your manner of living to avoid such diseases.

So, today we are going to share some tips to stay healthy and prevent illness and disability –

1. Never smoke or quit smoking immediately if you are a smoker

The most common health problems observed due to smoking are cancer, tuberculosis, heart problems, weakening of bones, etc. It is very important to avoid outside smoke also. Never stand near a person who is smoking as it can lead to passive smoking which is also very injurious to health.

2. Stay away from alcoholic beverages if you want to live a healthy life

Alcohol can damage your internal organs such as liver, kidney and the most common effect of alcohol which is seen in 90% of drinkers is infection in the gastrointestinal tract leading to gastritis.

3. Be physically active and workout daily

Physical activity helps you to stay fit, maintain metabolism and boosts your brain functioning. It also helps you gain confidence.

4. In the case of diet, always try to make healthier choices.

Avoid junk food. Try to take more protein in your diet as they help in building your body. Proteins help in muscular growth. Every individual must take protein according to his or her body weight. Suppose, if a person A has a body weight of x kg, then he/she must approximately consume 0.9*x grams of protein daily. Take less carbohydrates. Add more fibre to your diet. Take a balanced diet. Don't overeat. Overeating can lead to obesity. Consume fruits which are rich in vitamin C. In summers, take fruits and vegetables which have high water content and limit protein intake as it requires a lot of energy to digest and it produces a lot of heat. Hence, it can cause stomach upset in summers. 

5. Don't sleep immediately after eating

Walk for a few minutes before laying in bed. This will help in proper digestion of your food.

6. Maintain healthy body weight

It helps to stay healthy. It reduces the risk of abnormal blood pressure, diabetes, heart attacks, etc. 

7. Get regular check ups

If you are above 60 years of age, take regular check ups and monitor your blood pressure and blood sugar levels regularly. Consult doctor immediately if you feel unwell.

8. In today's world, stress is inevitable

Every second person is stressed. It may be the stress of a job, financial condition, health condition, disability, relationships, etc. But try to reduce stress as it can lead to serious health conditions such as depression, anxiety, high blood pressure and cholesterol levels, heart attacks, etc. So, sit back and relax a bit and reduce your stress.

9. Take proper sleep

It affects every aspect of your life. Proper sleep is necessary for healthy functioning of the brain, helps to develop immunity and fight diseases. You may have noticed that inadequate sleep would have caused an upset stomach as a good sleep is necessary for proper digestion of the food. Inadequate sleep can lead to retarded development of the mind decreasing the capacity of the brain to retain or memorise things. A person should at least sleep 8 hours a day. A good sleep also prevents heart diseases and several other health issues.

9. Reduce your screen time

Continuous use of phones or electronic gadgets can damage your eyesight. If you have to work continuously on phones or laptops, always use spectacles that reduce the stress on your eyes. Try to take short breaks during the working hours.

10. Limit Gaming and Social Media

Online gaming, watching movies and social media should be limited to one or two hours a day as they increase your screen time to a great extent. They also distract you from your goals.

11. Get vaccinated against harmful diseases

Vaccination makes your immune system stronger and prevents you from catching infections even if you get in contact with it. It is one of the best ways to save ourselves from harmful diseases.

12. Maintain good sexual health

Always wash your genitals after intercourse. Always use Protections such as condoms to save yourself from catching sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV, syphilis, gonorrhoea, etc. Don't indulge in intercourse with more than one partner as it increases the risk of catching HIV or other STDs. We don't have a vaccine for HIV till now.

Having a good sex life increases your quality of life automatically. Eat foods which help in enhancing your performance. In case you feel some problem with your sexual health, contact your health care provider and take medical advice. 

13. Accidents are the most common cause of deaths nowadays

This is because most of the people do not wear helmets, seat belts and do not follow traffic laws. Drink and drive cases are most common. Never drive a vehicle after consumption of alcoholic beverages. While driving people use cell phones which is a major cause of accidents. Never ever use mobile phones while driving. If you are getting an urgent call, stop your vehicle in the sideway and only then answer the call. 

14. Antibiotic resistance is a new emerging problem in the modern world

Avoid the use of antibiotics without prescription from a certified health care provider. If you develop antibiotic resistance, then the infections would be hard to treat and can lead to many serious problems. The death rate has increased over the past few years due to this problem.

15. Never stay alone when you are feeling depressed

Never let negative thoughts come to your mind. Talk to your loved ones if you feel depressed.
