12 effective tips get rid puffiness around eyes

Mild swelling or puffiness under the eyes leads to the formation of bags under the eyes. It is a very common occurrence when people start to age or because of weakening of the tissues around the eyes starts to happen. This weakening of tissues could also include the weakening of some muscles which are meant for supporting the eyelids of the person.

Appearance of puffiness is noticeable in the lower eyelids because of the movement of fats from the eyes (which are meant to support the eyes). Accumulation of fluid below the eyes could also cause the puffiness.

This puffing up under the eyes gives a very disturbing look to the face of the person. The main cause behind this condition is considered to be cosmetic problems for most of the people suffering from it. 

Few general causes of puffiness of eyes are listed below :

  • Intake of excessive salt

  • Not getting adequate sleep

  • Using gadgets for a long time, which causes eye strain

  • Allergic conditions

  • Various infections in the eyes

  • Imbalance in the hormonal levels mainly because of thyroid related problems

If the puffiness of your eye is not a result of any serious kind of medical problem then there are few tips for you that are going to help you decrease this problem to a great extent and those tips are listed below: 

  1. Cutting down the usage of salt in your food: Your eye is an area which is found to have low sodium concentration. Wherever the concentration of sodium is low, water generally finds its path to that location and increases the concentration. This means we should put down the salt shaker and stop using extra salt because extra salt is one of the main reasons for the puffiness of the eyes.

  2. Management of your allergies: As you should know this simple fact that allergy seasons and puffiness (watery) of eyes always go together. So, to get rid of this problem you can eat medicines which are helpful in countering sinus infection, cold or your allergies. This will surely dry up your puffy eyes and help you to get rid of your running nose too.

  3. Potato: Potato is helpful in relieving the puffiness of eyes. If grated potatoes are collected together and tied in a cloth for some time and placed over the eye, it relieves the symptoms of puffy eyes. Repetition of this process several times in a day is going to affect the problem upto a great extent.

  4. Cucumber: Slices of a cucumber which is refrigerated for 10 minutes are used to place on the puffed up eyes. When they are placed, an astringent effect of the enzyme present in those slices leads to the reduction of the puffiness of the eye.

  5. Refrigerated tea bags: This is one of the few ways which helps to get rid of swollen eyes without wasting much time. Using a tea bag is the perfect solution for you. Take two tea bags and simply damp them in ice cold water. Then place these bags on your eyes for at least 30 minutes. Use cold water for washing the eyes. After completing the procedure you will see a drastic change in the puffiness around the eyes. This will ultimately make you feel very fresh and relaxed. 

  6. Chilled milk: When you're having puffy eyes and are very sensitive this can work as a magic. This home remedy is one of the most popular for the treatment of puffy eye problems. You have to take two clean cotton pads to start the process. Then, dip it inside the cold milk, now, place these soaked cotton pads for ten minutes on your eyes. This process is to be repeated everyday and it is more fruitful if performed in the morning. This will help you get rid of any kind of puffiness or water retention in the eye.

  7. Egg whites: Firsty egg white is beaten till white stiff peaks are not formed. This is then applied under your eyes. When the egg white has dried up, it will make the underside of your eye tighten up. This is to be done for twenty minutes, (after applying it leave it for 20 minutes) and then, it is washed with cold water. After this, you will find relaxation in the puffiness of the eyes.

  8. Green tea: Using green tea bags for reduction of puffiness of eyes is also a great home remedy. Take two chilled and steeped green tea bags, then, place it over both the eyes for a time period of 10-15 minutes. After the removal of the tea bags, you will find that puffiness, swelling and sensitivity of the eye has reduced and has been brought to its original shape.

  9. Compression using cold things: These are the stuff that you can prepare at your home very easily and this procedure is very simple and safe. This procedure includes cucumber slices, chilled teaspoon, washcloth soaked in ice cold water and vegetables which are frozen. They are to be wrapped in a soft cloth for the protection of your eyes. Long-lasting effects can be seen if performed daily for a few minutes.

  10. Neti pot: This is useful to us in many ways. It not only helps reduce our under-eye bags but helps in cleaning our sinuses and dark circles too. A saline solution is poured inside the neti pot, then, it is placed on the nose's spout and the sinuses are irrigated. This helps in removal of any kind of mucus or debris. For getting optimum results, certain points are to be followed: 

    1. Warm saline solution is preferred, which is made using half a spoon of salt and one cup of water

    2. Spout of the neti pot is placed on the upper part of the nostrils

  11. Food rich in collagen: Collagen production is completed by Vitamin C foods. This strengthens your muscles and tissues of areas around the eyes. You should include broccoli, kale, orange, red peppers, etc in your diet.

  12. Exposure to the sun: It is advised to use sunscreen of SPF 30 or above. You can also wear sunglasses. Following these steps will reduce the radical damage and photoaging from UVA and UVB light which is the cause of puffiness of the eye.
