To treat cough of my son 5 and 1/2 months, our doctor prescribed some antibiotics. Whereas I am of the opinion that antibiotics should be avoided, can I use them without any hesitation? I feel my son is too young for the antibiotics. Somebody please guide me.

Its difficult to assess without seeing the child. Please take a second opinion by another doctor who can examine the child.

Antibiotics are a group of medicines that are used to treat infections caused by bacteria, antibiotics are normally only prescribed for serious bacterial infections - for ex pneumonia. When prescribed, it is important to take the entire course of antibiotics which helps to prevent resistance developing to that antibiotic, but in your case if your child is suffering from cough I think you should go for homoeopathic treatment, and take some precaution like avoid curd, milk, rice, cold drink, any cold things, and give him lukewarm water to drink.

Antibiotics should be avoided ifl the infection is mild. If antibiotics are given regularly it has side effects. Homoeopathy is a good option. It treats without side effects so safer.
