The newer terminology for maniac depression is bipolar mood disorder.
It's a lifetime disorder with waxing and waning course due to change in neurotransmitters in brain. The management is based on continuing the mood stabilizer medications and avoid relapse of symptoms. There is no permanent and once and for all treatment for it. The onus lies on being compliant to medications and controlling the episodes of relapse.
The more you educate yourself about the disorder the better you can control it.
