My father was detected with localized prostate cancer last year and was followed by a heart attack later. He then have to undergo angioplasty with a non-drug eluting stent. Over one year has passed and his Stress test reports are excellent now as per cardiologist. Can he undergo a radical prostatectomy (prostate cancer surgery ) now or it will be risky for him to undergo surgery? Thank you.

Dear, your father was diagnosed with localized prostate cancer a year back. Was he started on any hormonal agents during this time? first, since one year has passed his cancer will have to be re staged, meaning certain investigations have to be done to evaluate if the cancer has progressed further. These will include ct scan of abdomen and pelvis, thorax, bone scan, serum psa, value among others. Second, there is an alternative to surgery. Its radiation therapy followed by hormonal treatment. This treatment has been proved to be as good as surgery and his present cardiac condition will not be a risk for it. I would advise you to consult a radiation oncologist.

Go for metastatic work up ( investigations already advised) . If no metastasis and patient is fit for surgery then radical prostatectomy if unfit for surgery then Radiation therapy.
