Hello, there are many causes of varicose veins. Many times several factors add up to cause and increase varicose veins. Causes include heredity, obesity, standing position jobs, lack of mobility, and previous leg vein clots (deep venous thrombosis). The main cause is loss of valve function in the veins which allows the blood to pool in the leg veins. The patient may get pain, heaviness, dragging sensation. If left, visible bulging can occur as you have stated. In many cases, because of pooling of blood and increased venous tension, we can get swelling of legs, blackish colouration, and ulcer formation.
