My wife is having a hole in the left ear and having discharge of pus frequently. During treatment with antibiotics discharge is controlled. But after some period same problem is repeating. During consultation with an ent, he suggested for operation and grafting of new ear drum as a permanent remedy. Is this operation is required. Are there any alternative. What are the plus and minus point of this operation. Kindly send a detailed opinion

It depends on the size of hole. If it is small then there are chances of self healing with conservative management and few precautions but if large and associated with hearing loss one has to go for operation (myringoplasty). Its not a very big procedure and done under local anaesthesia with no major post op complications. First u need to get an audiometry done to know the amount of hearing loss. U can send me the reports.
