In some rare cases of the human anatomy, an ear appears to be misshapen or protruding. This could have happened either at birth or could have happened due to an injury or an accident. In such cases, an ear surgery is the only option available to treat the condition. Called medically as otoplasty it involves reshaping the ear to the desired extent so that a natural look is achieved. The cosmetic ear surgery is performed in cases where the ears protrude sideways, large ear lobes and lop ear (A condition in which the tip folds down and elongates forward). They are also used in treating shell ears - a condition where certain parts of the ear are missing. An ENT will lay out the detailed procedure of the surgery that is going to be performed along with its merits and risks. An ENT uses a laser in the advanced form of revision ear surgery treatment to reshape the ear. The process involves cutting the cartilage which forms the base of any ear. Then accordingly an ENT makes a call whether to reduce the cartilage completely or to fold it in the case of elongation. Then stitches are done to close the cut. A small cut to the back of the ear is made in both instances. The procedure is mostly done as an outpatient one and the resting period would be in the range of two to three weeks. Normal activities can be carried out afterwards. Check-ups are advised once the healing process is over, and with proper medications, the condition is permanently solved.
