Isolated speech delay is the commonest type of developmental problem. A detailed history of birth and post birth history is required to correctly get the diagnosis, but nicu stay is a risk factor. Investigations like hearing assessment and brain scans maybe necessary. It is also important to know whether the child plays with other children, uses gestures, maintains eye contact etc. The treatment usually depends on the cause. Speech therapy maybe required.
