Can a root canal be done on the wisdom tooth? As I have both the wisdom tooth having hole and would want to fill it up and if require I am ok with root canal also. Doctors advise to take the wisdom tooth out but I do not want to loose my wisdom tooth. In one of the wisdom tooth, 15 years back a root canal was done but the silver filing came out. Please suggest a way to salvage wisdom tooth without it to take out.

Hi, the best treatment for a wisdom tooth problem is to get them removed. There is no point in having the wisdom tooth treated by root canal because of the following reason: 1. Reach/access: since wisdom tooth is the last tooth in the mouth, the reach or access for the dentist is very difficult. Because of this the instrumentation may not be proper. 2. Anatomy: the structure of the wisdom unlike other teeth is in most of the cases malformed. It becomes very difficult for the dentist to assess the number of canals and the root canal treatment may go for a failure. 3. Crown: again due to inaccessability it is very difficult for us to put a cap or a crown onto it. Probably the reason why your dentist has done a silver filling. I would suggest that you get your wisdom teeth removed.
