Hello doctor, my cousin is suffering with schizophrenia. We visited so many hospitals. But the treatment is temporary. She was not recovered. Would like to speak with you before visiting you. Is this problem permanently cured? Please let me know.

Schizophrenia is not curable but you can make the person quite functional when you combine good therapy with medication. The medication may have to be lifelong. Schizophrenia is a very complex and difficult disease to treat, even with medication. All psychotropic medicines have side-effects: that is inescapable. But I suspect that she is depending entirely on medication when in reality she needs to combine it with counseling or therapy. In therapy she will learn a lot of coping mechanisms and techniques to remain functional and lead a close-to-normal life. She will also learn about emotions and how they can impact her condition adversely. Expressing emotions in an appropriate manner will equip her for life. Talking and sharing about the many disturbing thoughts and learning to understand herself and moderate her responses will go a long way towards normalizing and training her mind. Exercise must be a regular part of her life for various reasons. Put her on a productive and strict schedule. The idle mind is the devil's workshop for sure, and more so for a schizophrenic.
