I had a bi lateral TKR in Oct 2001 and a revised TKR IN RIGHT knee in Jun 2010.So far it is functioning well. However I am now having severe pain in my LEFT leg for the last 3-4 months. This pain occurs for an hour or two every morning after I get up and appears to emanate from the area above the LEFT KNEE-CAP , possibly from some NERVE. After I massage the area firmly and/or apply a vibrator, the pain eases gradually.A hot water bath also helps as also exercises of my LOWER torso/legs. I consulte d an ORTHO a few weeks back and he did not find anything wrong with the TKR and suggested wearing a KNEE brace on the left knee to protect /prolong its life. However,I continue to suffer the daily pain for 2-3 hours. Rest of the day is comfortable with the knee brace. I do not wish another REVISION TKR on the left knee if it can be avoided. CAN SOMEONE KINDLY ADVISE ABOUT THE SOURCE AND REASON BEHIND THE PAIN AND what I can /should do to avoid / minimize it . OR MAYBE I should think of having another leftside TKR, HOWEVER MUCH I WANT TO AVOID IT. I AM DESPERATE . PLEASE ADVISE.

Dear, According to Ayurveda joint pain is known as Sandhigata vata. With increase in age vata dosha is predominant in human body that is why with aging disease caused by vata dosha increases in body. Joint pain is a common symptom with many possible causes. Joint Pain and Arthritis are the one of the most devastating conditions faced by individuals, particularly elderly women today. When there is pure Vata dosha involvement (a pain without swelling or discoloration) then the massage with medicated ayurvedic oil is quite useful & supplement is helpful in balancing bodily humors ?vata, which is responsible dosha for Sandhigata vata . Knee Pain: Various Treatment Methods

Knee Pain: Various Treatment Methods

The knee is the largest joint in the human body and is a complex structure formed of bone, muscle and cartilage. Development of pain in the knees can be caused by numerous factors such as aging, injuries, diseases, dietary deficiencies, etc.

Arthritis is the most common cause of knee pain and usually affects the elderly and aged. It occurs due to an inflammation of the joint and causes pain, swelling, redness and inflexibility of the knees.

What are the factors that determine treatment method?

Diagnosis for knee pain varies from patient to patient as each case is different and must be approached differently. Some of the factors that determine the treatment method are as follows:

  • Cause of the problem
  • Nature and intensity of pain
  • Age of the patient
  • Medical history of the patient
  • Diet and lifestyle of the patient

There are a number of different types of arthritis which can affect the knees in different ways and, consequently, require different types of treatment methods.

What are the various treatment methods for knee pain?

1. Conventional Remedies - These are used in case of conditions that are not too severe or chronic. It includes keeping on bed rest, using an ice pack, taking a painkiller and anti-inflammatory medicines, wearing knee braces, etc.

2. Physical Therapy - There are many stretching and strengthening exercise routines that help alleviate knee pain and treat the condition. Recovery is achieved by making the muscles around the knees stronger and increasing stability and flexibility.

3. Injections to the Knees - A number of anti-inflammatory substances and supplements, as well as lubricants, can be injected into the knee joint which helps reduce pain and makes the joint more supple.

4. Stem Cell Therapy - This involves drawing platelets from the patient's blood and injecting it into the knee joint for repairing damage caused to ligaments, tendons or cartilage.

5. Surgery - Surgical procedures for treating knee pain include partial or complete knee replacements. If you wish to discuss any specific problem, you can consult a pain management specialist.

Pain in the knee joints can be due to multiple reasons. One of the common condition is age related arthritis known as osteoarthritis, that affects the cartilage covering the bones and helps in smooth movement. This is a condition occurring due to wear and tear of the cartilage. Increasing uric acid in the blood invariably affects smaller joints like great toe and other smaller joints. Have got the uric acid level checked? is it high? joint pain can be relieved by pain killers or antiinflammatory drugs. Plus weight control and life style management is also helpful. For reducing uric acid levels there are drugs available as well as there is a need to avoid purine rich foods like organ meet, alcohol, chicken, sweetened drinks, certain fishes etc.

Dear sir,
My name is noor l suffering from knee problem hw can I get treatment please can you help me.
HI Dear, Knees bear most of our body weight, unfortunately, they are one of the most ignored body parts. The knee joints are the first to bear the brunt of your increasing weight and also the first joints to start giving up on you, giving rise to ailments like knee pain and inflammation of the joint, which when left untreated, can ruin your knees forever. Here are a few exercises you can do to strengthen your knees and avoid knee problems in future. 1. Leg extensions-Leg extensions are done with the help of a leg extension machine. Begin with using light weights and slowly increase the weights. Sit on the machine with your knees bent at a ninety-degree angle and feet under the pads (of the exercise machine) pointing towards the front. Make sure your knees are in a straight line with the toes and don’t cross the toe line. If knees are over the toe, you may hurt your knees. Sit straight with your spine erect and hold the side bars. Now slowly extend your legs as much as you can. Do not jerk your knee. Slowly lower the leg and come back to the original position. To intensify the workout, you can lift the weights by extending one leg at a time and hold the position for ten seconds and then lower the weight. 2. Standing Leg extensions–The best part about standing leg extensions is you don’t need a machine for this exercise. All you need is a resistance band and a hook to anchor it. Begin with anchoring the resistance band to a wall or a strong support that won’t budge. Attach the band to your ankle and stand away from the support so that the band doesn’t sag but is stretched. Stand with both your feet at the same distance from the support. Hold on to a chair for support if needed. Take your right leg behind to a point where the band just begins to stretch and slowly extend it. Make sure your leg is steady and toes point forward. You can hold the extended position for ten seconds to increase the tension. 3. Static Squat– Squats not only strengthen your knees but also work out your quadriceps. To do a static squat, you can take the support of a wall or any other fixed object. Hold the support with your hands fully extended in front of you and elbows straight. Now, slowly lower yourself as if your are sitting on a chair. Go down only till your knees are bent at a right angle, and do not go beyond that. Your back should be straight and not rounded, and the knees shouldn’t cross the toe line.

Main cause of all their problems is increase fat on their body. The ideal weight must be 50 kg. It increase pressure on their knees, heart, blood vessels. So reduce 20 kg weight and you see all problems are gone. For weight reduction use steps: 1. Morning brisk walk at least 2 km. 2. Stop eating fried, non vegetarian, dairy products. 3. Vegetables, fruits, serials, grains use in food. 4. Use hot packs for pain. 5. Gym cycling, breathing exercises.
