7 Ways To Control Hypertension

7 Ways To Control Hypertension

Hypertension, which is also known as high blood pressure is a prominent factor that is responsible for the development of many serious health issues like cardiac disorder, chronic kidney diseases, vision loss and stroke. The dominant causes of hypertension include troubled lifestyle style, genetics, environmental factors and internal imbalances. You cannot possibly control the chances of suffering from hypertension but you can always prevent and minimize the risk of the problems that are associated with hypertension.

The following are some lifestyle tips that can help you to manage and minimize the risk of developing hypertension:

  • Maintain a healthy body weight: Weight plays a crucial role in the prevention of hypertension. People who are obese run the risk of developing hypertension. It is advisable to lose excessive body fat to maintain an ideal body weight. A well-maintained body weight minimizes the risk of hypertension.
  • Eat a healthy and balanced diet: Unhealthy food intake is a primary factor that causes hypertension. Eating a healthy and balanced diet enables you to manage your blood pressure effectively. Incorporate plenty of fresh fruits and leafy vegetables, especially the ones rich in potassium. Limit excess intake of calories, sugar, and fat as they tend to increase the risk of hypertension.
  • Reduce consumption of salt: Higher sodium intake increases your blood pressure level. Avoid high-sodium processed and packaged foods as they are high in sodium content. A low-sodium diet enables you to keep your blood pressure normal.
  • Exercise regularly: An active lifestyle is known to lower the risk of hypertension. Make sure to indulge yourself into some physical activities on a daily basis.
  • Limit the alcohol intake: Excessive intake of alcohol can raise your blood pressure level. Limit your alcohol consumption to minimize the chances of hypertension.
  • Monitor your blood pressure: Monitor your blood sugar level on a regular basis. Hypertension usually does not show any symptoms. If your blood pressure ranges between 120-139/80-89 millimeters of mercury it is an indication that you run a higher risk of developing hypertension. A raise in blood pressure demands moderation of lifestyle practices and controlled food intake.
  • Manage stress level: Excessive stress and anxiety are not good for your blood pressure. Severe stress is known to shoot up your blood pressure level which leads to the development of many other health related complications including the improper functioning of crucial organs like heart and kidney. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor.

I am 34 years old male. I am not a chain smoker, however smoke around 5 cigarettes a day. What should I do to keep my heart tar free. What diet chart should I follow. I am trying to quit smoking, yet to quit it completely. Is there any specific guideline for quitting?

LCPS, BAM&S
General Physician, Pune
Smoking even one cigarette is hazardous for the heart. Five is bad and chain smoking is worst. Smoke not only contain tar but about 100 chemicals and most of them are bad. Heart attack with instant death is the most dreaded impact. Quit it completely and instantly. Start chewing gum and cardamom whenever you get a feeling of smoking. In just 3-4 weeks, you would have quit smoking. Eat fresh fruits, drink 3 litres of water, a normal home made food.

I have done my lipid profile test. And the report is Cholesterol, total - 187 mg/dL Triglycerides - 197.00 mg/dL HDL cholesterol - 38.00; mg/dL LDL cholesterol, calculated - 109.60 mg/dL VLDL cholesterol, calculated - 39.40 mg/dL Tell me about my report And what precautions should I have to take.

MBBS, MD-General Medicine, DM - Cardiology
Cardiologist, Secunderabad
Dear Satya, your report looks fine to me except your HDL which is slightly low and your LDL which is slightly high. But these levels don't warrant any drug therapy. You can do well to follow diet and exercise regimen suited to you. I would advise you to loose some kilos which will improve your lipid profile also. Thank you.

I will smoke a lot so that I had a problem in heart so I can not sleep well and good at night so please give me the suggestion for that.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd

At 21 you have smoked and caused a heart problem? You must have smoked quite heavily. You have to quit cold turkey because the body and mind will torture you endlessly while attempting a reduction in smoking. The tobacco tar in cigarette smoke lines your lung with huge patches that make that portion dysfunctional. Your oxygen carrying capacity is jeopardized, and breathing is impinged on. But don’t be discouraged because it is not too late even now to reverse all the ill-effects of smoking. I don’t know what other organs could be damaged but do go for a thorough medical check-up to assess the effects of your abuse. Regarding improving your lungs, do a lot of aerobic exercise breathing through your nostrils only. Then there are a lot of deep breathing exercises in Yoga which you can learn too. Deep breathing cleanses your system and lungs and restores it to good health. Deep breathing uses the 80% of the lungs which are not normally used in normal breathing and even when exerting yourself. The greatest effect is in the lungs because this substance is processed through the respiratory system directly through the lung surface. When quitting, you must take one day at a time; though you must give up all smoking at once, and promptly. If you look too far ahead you will get discouraged and will give up. If you sit and count the number of days you have given up, that will also focus too much on achievement. You must focus on the here and now, on that day to be precise. After all quitting is not that easy due to many factors. So even if you fail one day, you must try and try again. Very few people succeed in their first attempt. Your persistence will eventually pay off. The urge to discontinue is hampered by many factors but the worst of them is the conditioning. In fact, these conditions can exist all through the day, unlike other addictions. But your desire to want to stop is the most important factor. It is important to find out about the ill-effects of smoking to have a reason that alarms you about continuing the habit. The information is really scary but true and you must remind yourself about this every day. The nicotine in tobacco smoke stimulates the heartbeat to raise the blood pressure in no time at all. So you must avoid it like the plague: it is just very bad medicine for you. In fact, it is highly toxic too. You will need to stop smoking or consuming any tobacco related items with immediate effect. You should start vigorous exercises, gradually increasing it over a period of time. Do deep breathing exercises every time you feel like smoking (try Yoga), and replace the oral urge with some healthy food substitute to satiate the need. You may also take hard candy or chew gum. If the urge is too strong, then use nicotine gums and nicotine patches, for a little while until the smoking drive reduces, substantially. You may also join Smokers Anonymous in your city where the support is really extraordinary for like-minded people who are also in the same situation. Keep yourself occupied or engaged with interesting activities during the times when it is most tempting. Keep the company of non-smokers for some time i.e. at least for the first 21 days. Above all announce it to everyone that you have quit smoking. Here’s a piece of very good advice: even if you accidentally/willfully take a cigarette, it is not the end of the world – you can start the cessation all over again. You must persevere with the best support until you defeat this addiction. Counseling is very useful in the initial stages and when temptations are at their highest. You could also join twitter2quit program and enjoy its success to give up smoking.

No fats. Lots of lemon juices or oranges plus other citrus fruits. Do exercise as it burns the fat. Apple cider vinegar plus a spoon of honey with water taken several times in a day does help few people. You can try. Reduce your weight by simple diet of no fats and no sugars and lots of salads plus just one simple meal per day. Do write back after a month.

IMPORTANT NUTRIENTS DURING WRIGHT LOSS: Potassium (Lower Blood Pressure): You can get it from milk, potatoes, sweet potatoes, bananas, avocados, and legumes. It’s good for your blood pressure. Your muscles and nerves need it, too. Magnesium (Prevent Disease): Good source of magnesium, as are beans, peas, whole grains, and nuts (especially almonds). Put some or all of these foods on your plate, and you could do a lot for your health. Vitamin A (Healthy Eyes): Get this nutrient from orange and yellow plant foods, like sweet potatoes, carrots, and winter squash. It's also in spinach and broccoli. Vitamin A supports good vision, a healthy immune system, and tissue growth. Vitamin D (Strong Heart and Mind): Your bones, muscles, and nerve fibers all need D. The vitamin also helps keep your immune system in its prime. Your body can make vitamin D when you get enough sunshine, best to get it such as salmon, mackerel, and mushrooms exposed to ultraviolet light. There are small amounts in liver, cheese, and egg yolks. Milk, some brands of orange juice, and many cereals are fortified with it, too. Calcium (Strong Bones, Teeth, and muscle): There’s more to this mineral than healthy teeth and bones. It’s also key for your muscles, including your heart. It might even help you avoid getting high blood pressure. Dairy is an excellent source. Other foods that have it include canned salmon, kale, and broccoli. Remember, you need enough vitamin D for your body to absorb calcium. Vitamin C (Boost Immunity): This vitamin, found in many fruits and vegetables, has other benefits, too. It boosts the growth of bone and tissue. As an antioxidant, it might also help protect your cells from damage. Fiber: Get loads of benefits with fiber from whole grains, beans, and produce. A high fiber diet can help lower your cholesterol and keeps you regular. Plus, it might lower the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers. And additional fiber is great if you want to lose a few pounds. It fills you up, so you eat less.

Do you have pain while lying down. If yes, it is a musculoskeletal pain. Take voveran tablet twice a day for 3 days. The pain will become less and will go away. If it still does not get better with this, you require further consultation.

I am 38 year old male, I have chest pain in left side from last 8 months, I consulted more 3 doctors they said you having digestive problem, they took x-ray, ECG, echo cardiac sound.

PG Hom, London, BHMS
Homeopath, Mumbai
Hello Mr Anwar, If the X ray, ECG and Echo cardio gram are all normal, then you dont need to worry much but you need to be vigilant. Take antacid Gelusil one tsp twice a day for a week and see if there is any improvement. If the pain lasts, you need to consult another doctor who is different from the one you consulted with before, in order to take a second opinion and you will have to repeat the ECG and Echocardiogram.
