Jayashriji, Ideally when you are on treatment for hypothyroidism with adequate dosage of thyroxine then TSH should be maintained around 3 to 4 mU/L, then most of the symptoms are well in control. If the TSH levels go up, then the symptoms invariably reappear. Changing the dosage on your own is not good. It is better to take your doctor's opinion. Further there is no mention of current TSH level to give any opinion. Thanks

Mr. lybrate-user, Hypothyroidism is a deficiency disorder, where thyroid gland produces less or nil thyroxine. Thyroxine is an essential hormone required for day to day functioning and development of brain, plus involved in a variety of vital metabolic reactions in the body hence required every moment in the body. Therefore, it has to be supplemented every day for the lifetime. So treatment will be for whole life. Thanks.

lybrate-user, Thanks for the query.
The TSH value mentioned 5.49 mU/L is the current one with dosage of Thyroxine 75 mcg is it? If so then you may have to increase it by another 12.5 mcg per day. Then check TSH after 8 weeks. Ideally TSH should be maintained around 3 to 4 mU/L on adequate dosage of thyroxine. At that level all the symptoms are in check. Thanks.

Hypothyroidism is a deficiency disorder, due lack of thyroxine, the hormone produced by thyroid gland. Since it is a very vital hormone required for brain development and functioning, plus for various important metabolic functions, hence needs to be supplemented daily from out side. So treatment has to go on for lifetime. There is no option. Even when tsh levels come within normal limit.

Poonam ji, Thanks for the query.
I have seen the details given. TSH 0.341 mU/L is lower than even the lower limit. Plus T4 is fairly high. This suggests that present dosage is a bit high. That needs to be reduced. So cut down 12.5 mcg per day to 75 mcg per day. Then check TSH after 6 weeks. It should be maintained around 3 to 4 mU/L, at which level most of the symptoms are in check. If you have any questions please do come back.Thanks.

Hi only treatment is thyroxine tablets as you are taking. It will take some days or weeks to get rid of all symptoms of hypothyroidism. After about 4 to 6 weeks you will have to get thyroid assay (tsh test) done again to see if the dose being taken is adequate or it may have to be increased. Avoid soya and soya containing products, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, mustard and coffee. Increase intake of green vegetables, fruits and use whole grain flour for making rotis and chapatis. Plus exercise...more
