About Monticope Tablet

Monticope Tablet is prescribed to relieve the symptoms like runny nose, itchy or watery eyes, sneezing, hives that are usually related to all-year-round as well as seasonal allergies. It can be used in the form of combination therapy, meaning you may be prescribed this drug along with other medications.

The medicine blocks histamine and leukotriene (natural substances). These are the body generates during the time of an allergic reaction. Thus this medication relieves you of the symptoms of the reaction.

It is used for the treatment of the symptoms that are associated with allergies, both seasonal and all-year-round. Monticope Tablet can also be used to get relief from itching caused due to hives.

The dosage of this medicine depends on your age, the severity of your condition, medical history and your body’s reaction after the first dose. You should also keep in mind not to stop these medicines suddenly as there is a possibility that your symptoms may get worse.

The side effects of Monticope Tablet can vary depending on the age group. The mild side effects do not stay long, but you can consult your doctor for a solution. There are some serious side effects though, that need immediate treatment, like:

  • Allergic reactions, that can cause itching, swelling of your face or throat, or a rash
  • Problems related to the kidney, like trouble in urinating, changes in your usual amount of urine or blood in urine
  • Blurred vision
  • Yellowing of your skin or the eyes
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Sudden mood changes like getting agitated, aggressive, having suicidal thoughts

This medication is known to cause drowsiness, especially in the initial hours. Refrain yourself from activities like driving or using machinery during this period. Also, avoid alcohol as it can further raise your risk of feeling drowsy.

Symptoms of overdose include seizures, sedation, hypotension. There is no specific treatment for an antihistamine overdose, however, most of its clinical toxicity is due to anticholinergic effects.

Anticholinesterase inhibitors may be useful by reducing acetylcholinesterase. For anticholinergic overdose with severe life-threatening symptoms, physostigmine 1-2 mg (0.5 mg or 0.02 mg/kg for children) I.V., slowly may be given to reverse these effects.

      Patients with end-stage kidney diseases and creatinine clearance less than 10 ml/min are advised not to take this medicine. Children below the age of 12 having impaired kidney functions are also advised not to take this medicine.

    • Does this affect liver function?

      While taking this medicine, it is advised to closely observe the liver functions as the medicine can put the patients with a history of liver disease at an increased risk of worsening the condition.

    How does this medication work?

    This medicine is a combination of levocetirizine and montelukast. They belong to the class of antihistamine and leukotriene receptor antagonist. Thus it works via dual mechanism.

    Firstly, it selectively inhibits the peripheral H1 receptors thereby reducing the histamine levels in the body. And secondly, it antagonizes the action of leukotriene. It specifically acts on allergies caused in the stomach and intestine, blood vessels and airways leading to the lung.

        The medicine does not have any interactions with alcohol, however, consumption of alcohol with the medicine can increase the intensity of side effects such as blurred vision, dizziness and sleepiness.

        The use of any ongoing medicine must be reported to the doctor who may adjust the doses of the medicines accordingly. It is advised not to stop any medicine before consulting the doctor. The use of the following medicines must be duly reported: Capecitabine, Phenytoin, Phenobarbital and Fluorouracil.

        Patients having an acute or severe attack, Phenylketonuria, CNS Depression, Urinary Retention, Eosinophilic conditions and Churg-Strauss syndrome should exercise caution.

        The Monticope medicine does not have any negative interactions with food, hence it can be taken both, with or without food.
