Dear lybrate-user,
It is nice that you are fighting with depression for 20 years.
Please continue Lamictal 300 mg to prevent future episode. In each episode of depression, the input to your brain goes down. Memory has input, retention and output. How will be the output if input itself is less? Now at 46 years your mood is at base level. Hereafter your input will be increased by various neurocognitive rehabilitation therapy. Some of them are available on net. Some psychosocial rehab centr...more

I know very much that these medications causing this problem. I never had this problem before my depressive episodes. Because of these dreams eventhouh I feel I slept I don't feel fresh and energetic after waking up in the morning like others. It is evident that quality of sleep is poor because of sleep disturbance. Kindly advise any suitable treatment to avoid these night weird dreams and shouting etc, do that I can have deep sleep. Regards.

Dear client, it is advisable that you meet your prescribing psychiatrist and share your concerns. You may also follow some sleep hygiene trchniques like not using gadgets, tv at least one hour prior to sleep time. Writing a diary entry about your feelings and activity during the day can help you to settle down emotionally before you sleep. Practice shavasana and visualise putting away all your sadness and worries into the air till it goes out of sight. This will help you get better and peaceful ...more

Hi, I am a chronic Major depression patient since more than 15 years. I had very severe major depressive episode 15 years back, with complete numbness of brain, unexplained fatigue, almost nil short term memory with no emotions which severely hampered my otherwise exceptionally sharp memory and cheerful initially doctor put me on flunil 40 mg and Vit E 400 IU this continued for almost 10 years even though in between I had occasional bouts of depression but never that severe as first one. Even though some improvement in mood but my memory issues like poor short term Memory, poor mental agility, severe fatigue and unexplained body pains, anxiety etc not much of improvement. Later I was put on Paroxetine 50 mg, Lamictal 300 mg, buspin 15 mg. Introduction of Lamictal helped in stabilising my mood to some extent, even though not upto desirable level. Earlier the mood used to be always well below base level. Buspin helped me in anxiety. Now the major problem is persisting poor short term memory, lack of fast grasping and process of brain. There is still lot of room for mood elevation from the current level. Kindly suggest add on medication that can elevate my mood above base level ad in particular short term memory issues. Regards.

I think you have done reasonably well for such a long period of depression. I am quite disappointed that you did not or were not guided to seek therapeutic help for your depression in tandem with the medication. It is still not too late to seek counseling help and learn some skills, tools, and techniques to help cope with your disorder. You will regain more composure an feel of higher spirits over time and may need to rely less on medication if advised. It will help in the meantime to do the fol...more

Dear Ramesh,
You are on appropriate treatment pharmacologically. You need to live better with your disorder. You need therapy for it. Come out in detail, with examples of loss of short term memory and how it has affected your life. In the therapy, you will learn different ways of dealing with it. Once that i done, you will be more confident and happy about yourself.

Dear Lybrate user
as you have been suffering from depression since last 20 yrs, you have been taking medicine, but it seems you have not seemed counseling. It's very very important to understand that in these cases, along with the medicines, counseling is also required. Medicine will not be so effective unless you address your issues that are deep rooted inside your mind in the form of thoughts. Taking medicine is an easy option, counseling is time consuming but is very effective.
