lybrate-user, When glucose level goes too low (hypoglycemia), then there is counter regulatory mechanism activated in the body. This leads to release of a hormone Glucagon from alpha cells in the pancreas. That hormone causes breakdown of glycogen in the liver, producing glucose, which in turn increases blood glucose. Body can not tolerate low glucose state for long time. Hence, this counter regulatory mechanism is activated. Thanks.

It is very essential to monitor glucose levels carefully while one is on high altitude tricking. It is better to maintain glucose level around 160 plus (9 mMoles/L) so as to avoid hypoglycemia or hyper one. It is essential to carry glucose gels and even glucagon injections in case of hypoglycemia. Glucometers may not give correct readings due to extreme temperatures.
