No. Without patient's motivation to give up the habit of alcohol, it is not possible. Try to motivate him for a de-addiction program in a professional setting. Though there are some medicines like disulfiram that are being given to the addicted people without their knowledge, sooner or later they find the trick and the problem will only aggravate.

It is the side effect of disulfiram. The use of this drug is only as an aversion agent so that if he takes alcohol while taking the drug he will have unpleasant effects and vomiting. Due to these unhappy effect the person is thought to stop taking further drinks. But only strong will power will help. For further assistance you can concern me privately

The tablet you mentioned is a steroid, why was it given. It is never indicated for alcoholism. Kindly get him admitted in a hospital with detailed evaluation. Good luck.

A doctor will prescribe an antabuse called disulfiram. It is not at all effective if the person is not going for therapy simultaneously. You need to cooperate with the prescription until the desired result is achieved. If you ingest even a small dose of alcohol or alcohol based syrups, you will likely have a mild to severe reaction that may entail hospitalization! are you going to be sufficiently committed? talk to your doctor and discuss all the repercussions before venturing into this therapy....more

You have to meet with a doctor who will prescribe disulfiram and if he takes even cough syrup which has a little alcohol, he can suffer some adverse reactions. So he has to be warned and he has to be sure to take the medicine.

2 bottles per day is too much. It might be difficult to treat him as out patient. Find out a nearest Deaddiction centre, which is licensed and has psychiatrist to treat and get him admitted there, his liver function test and other testsmight be needed to adjust the dosage of medications during detoxification and further de-addiction. All the best.

Dear lybrate-user,
Good that you know alcohol is causing dyspepsia and GERD. You must be knowing the treatment also- STOP alcohol.
If you have any difficulty in stopping alcohol, please take the help of doctors. They give you vitamins and benzodiazepines for withdrawal symptoms, they give anti craving tablets for 9-12 months to reduce your craving for alcohol. They may make you get aversion to alcohol with disulfiram, if needed.

When you go on enhancing your motivational level to stop drinking, it is possible. Doctors can help help you to treat the withdrawal symptoms, give you anti craving tablets or give aversion tablet like Disulfiram also. Of course doctors will investigate and treat the medical and mental disorders associated with alcohol consumption.

Dear lybrate-user,
Disulfiram (antabuse) reacts with alcohol to make acetaldehyde which is a poison. So if you take antabuse, you should be absolutely sure that you will not drink alcohol in any form - not even a teaspoonful. Carry with you a card always to say that you are on Antabuse. Inform a close friend and family member that you are on antabuse.
However you can not buy antabuse on your own. A psychiatrist only prescribe or dispense it. She/he will give you all the precautions to be...more
