Akem Tablet DT belongs to a class of medications called tetracyclines which block a bacterial protein from being made and therefore prevent the growth of bacteria. It is used to treat bacterial infections which include some sexually transmitted diseases, intestinal infections, skin infections, eye infections, urinary tract infections, respiratory infections, and others. This drug may also be used as part of a combination therapy to treat severe acne and to prevent malaria.

Common side effects include diarrhoea, a red rash, nausea, vomiting, flue symptoms, skin allergies and an increased risk of a sunburn. In young children and pregnant women it may result in permanent problems with teeth and bone development. It is considered safe in people who are breastfeeding.

To make sure doxycycline is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have :

  • Liver disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Asthma or sulfite allergy
  • A history of increased pressure inside your skull like severe headaches, dizziness, nausea, ringing in your ears, vision problems or pain behind your eyes.
  • If you also take isotretinoin including Claravis, Amnesteem or Sotret.
  • If you take seizure medicine or any blood thinners.

Akem Tablet DT is available in capsules, as oral solution, tablets, and a solution for injection, which is only given by a medical professional. It is best taken by mouth on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal, usually 1 or 2 times everyday. Drinking lots of fluids is highly recommended while taking this medicine. If stomach upset occurs, taking it with food may help even though its effect may decrease a little. It is advised to not lie down for 10 minutes after taking this medication. Take this medication 2 to 3 hours before or after taking products like antacids, quinapril, didanosine solution, vitamins or minerals, dairy products, and calcium-enriched juice. Follow your doctors instructions carefully. Your dosage will be based on your medical condition, weight, age and response to treatment. For the best effect, take this antibiotic at evenly spaced times.

    Akem Tablet DT may make you feel dizzy, sleepy, tired, or decrease alertness. If this happens, do not drive.
    Visual disturbances such as blurring of vision may occur during treatment with doxycycline.
  • Does this affect kidney function?

    Akem Tablet DT is safe to use in patients with kidney disease. No dose adjustment of Akem Tablet DT is recommended.
    However, talk to your doctor if you have any underlying kidney disease.
  • Does this affect liver function?

    Akem Tablet DT should be used with caution in patients with liver disease. Dose adjustment of Akem Tablet DT may be needed. Please consult your doctor.
  • Missed Dose instructions

    The missed dose should be taken as soon possible. It is advisable to skip the missed dose if it's already time for your next scheduled dose.
  • Overdose instructions

    Seek emergency medical treatment or contact the doctor in case of overdose.

Akem Tablet DT is a synthetic tetracycline with antimicrobial properties. It binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit and thus prevents the binding of minoacyl-tRNA to the mRNA-ribosome complex which in turn prevents protein synthesis in the bacterium.
