Thrombocytopenia is any disorder in which there is an abnormally low amount of platelets. Platelets are parts of the blood that help blood to clot. This condition is sometimes associated with abnormal bleeding. The symptoms include
Bleeding in the mouth and gums
Rash (pinpoint red spots called petechiae)
HOW IS THROMBOCYTOPENIA DIAGNOSED?
A general physician will conduct a physical examination to check for unusual bruises and wounds that won't heal. Blood tests, ultrasound, bone marrow aspiration and biopsy are other tests that help with diagnosis.
HOW IS THROMBOCYTOPENIA TREATED?
Treatment is guided by the cause and disease severity. The main concept in treating thrombocytopenia is to eliminate the underlying problem, whether that means discontinuing suspected drugs that cause thrombocytopenia, or treating underlying sepsis. Diagnosis and treatment of serious thrombocytopenia is usually directed by a hematologist. Corticosteroids may be used to increase platelet production. Lithium carbonate or folate may also be used to stimulate the bone marrow production of platelets
