Onlay is a dental restoration treatment that is used to repair rear teeth in case of moderate decay, cracked or fractured teeth. Onlays treatment is done when a filling cannot repair the damage. In this procedure, the dentist restores the original structure of tooth of the patient. Orofacial myofunctional therapy enables the patient to achieve normal functioning of the oral cavity. Onlay treatment is an extensive procedure and extends over the cusps of the tooth. It is more durable as the material used is hard and lasts long. A patient after receiving this dental treatment would not require further treatment unlike metal fillings and this procedure strengthens the tooth undergone the treatment. This treatment can be completed in two appointments. In the first appointment, the dentist would provide local anesthesia to the tooth thereby removing cavity and cleaning of the tooth in order to prepare the tooth for the treatment. A dental putty is being used to cast out the impression of the damaged tooth which is then sent to a dental laboratory for making an Onlay that would perfectly fit the tooth. Onlay is made of porcelain, composite resin or gold. Porcelain can be used to match the color of the tooth that restores the originality. The damaged tooth is kept covered until next appointment by a temporary restoration created by the dentist. In the second appointment, the Onlay is placed over the damaged tooth and fixed. A polish is used to provide aesthetic finishing to the tooth. Each appointment session is about an hour. If proper care is taken in maintaining the dental health like brushing, flossing etc. then this Onlay would last for about 30 years. The patient might feel slightly uneasy with the new surface of the tooth in the beginning and little soreness in the area around the teeth but within a couple of days, these discomforts would be gone. It is durable, long lasting and does not require further treatment. Dental Onlay cost is economical compared to the other traditional methods.
