Gingivoplasty is a type of surgery used to reshape healthy gum tissue around teeth. Gingivoplasty is done to simply to make gums look better as the gums may have an unusual shape or may not be formed normally. This could be due to genetic reasons, disease or trauma. Gingivoplasty typically reshapes the gums to make them look more natural. While Gingivectomy is the removal of gum tissue (gingiva) by surgery, Gingivectomy treatment involves removing overgrown gum tissue and improves the appearance of gums. A dental surgeon/dentist performs Gingivoplasty Treatment by thoroughly cleaning the tooth and this treatment is usually done with scalpels. Although Gingivoplasty can also be done with electro surgery or laser units, before the treatment, the patient will receive a local anesthetic shot to numb the gums. After the treatment, a periodontal dressing will be placed on the gums to protect the wound for a week or 15 days. After the gum treatment, the patient will be asked to follow a soft diet and avoid spicy food. In case of pain, the dentist might give painkillers and an antiseptic mouthwash. Also, it is very important to keep the mouth clean and the healing process might take few days. Although infection and prolonged bleeding may occur, it will stop after few days.
