Frequently Asked Questions

What are the symptoms of OCD in adults?

There are common themes in obsessions, including:

  • Anxiety about dirt or contamination
  • Not being able to accept uncertainty and harboring doubts
  • Being a stickler for symmetry and order
  • Thoughts that are violent or horrifying, which make you want to lose control and harm yourself or other people
  • Unwanted thoughts, such as those involving violence, sexuality, or religion

The following are some examples of obsessional signs and symptoms:

  • Fear of getting sick after handling objects that other people have touched
  • Uncertainty as to whether you locked the door or turned off the stove
  • Extreme stress when things aren't in their proper places or facing the right direction
  • Imagine ramming your vehicle into a crowd of people
  • Considering yelling obscenities or acting inappropriately in front of others
  • Sexually offensive images
  • Staying away from situations that might set off obsessions, like shaking hands

Similar to obsessions, compulsions frequently have underlying themes, such as:

  • Cleaning and laundering
  • Checking
  • Counting
  • Orderliness
  • Adherence to a strict schedule
  • The need for assurance

What triggers OCD?

OCD may be triggered or exacerbated by ongoing anxiety, stress, or by experiencing stressful events like a car accident or starting a new job. Perinatal OCD is occasionally brought on by pregnancy or giving birth.

What is the root cause of OCD?

OCD's exact root cause is unknown to experts. The environment, abnormalities in the brain, and genetics are thought to be contributing factors. Early adulthood or the teen years are frequent starting points. However, it can also begin during childhood.

How do you check if you have OCD?

Though any licensed medical professional is allowed to legally prescribe these medications, it is probably best to speak with a board-certified psychiatrist who is familiar with OCD directly. It is crucial to locate a psychiatrist with expertise in the use of medications to treat mental health disorders.

  1. Aversion to dirt or contamination
  2. Having trouble accepting uncertainty and harboring doubts
  3. The requirement for symmetry and order
  4. Thoughts of losing control and harming oneself or others that are aggressive or horrifying
  5. Unwanted thoughts, such as ones that are aggressive or touch on sexual or religious issues

Can OCD go away?

Over time, the symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder typically wax and wane. Since OCD often comes and goes or even disappears before returning, many people who have been diagnosed with it may have this suspicion. Obsessive-compulsive characteristics, however, remain, as was already mentioned. Ongoing management is needed instead.

The main cause of an increase or decrease in obsessive-compulsive symptoms is frequent stress from daily life. An individual's obsessive-compulsive behaviors will deteriorate during periods of high stress, while their behaviors may return to normal or even seem to have disappeared entirely during periods of low stress. While the severity of symptoms associated with an obsessive-compulsive thought pattern may change over time depending on stress levels, a chronic or deteriorating course is typical if you decide against seeking the necessary treatment.

Is OCD a disability?

A physical or mental impairment that restricts a person's ability to function in daily activities is regarded as a disability under the ADA. OCD is considered to be a disability. OCD, anxiety disorders, DD, and somatoform disorder are examples of non-psychotic disorders that can have a chronic course and lead to disability. There is evidence that OCD and anxiety disorders cause significant disability in 16–17% of cases. Olfson M et al., however, did not notice any observable significant OCD disability.

What foods help with OCD?

Tryptophan is an amino acid that is found in many foods, such as protein-rich items like turkey, chicken, milk, eggs, and cottage cheese, as well as whole grains like brown rice and quinoa, beans and legumes, pumpkin, sunflower, and sesame seeds, nuts, and root vegetables. It also occurs naturally in some fish, shellfish, and plants, including some berries. Your brain's ability to produce serotonin can be improved by increasing your intake of these foods, which may help you feel less OCD-related symptoms.

The management and prevention of the symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder may be significantly influenced by diet. In managing your symptoms, you shouldn't, however, solely rely on dietary changes. Before making substantial dietary changes, talk to your doctor. If your doctor has not specifically instructed you to stop taking a medication, do not.

What is the best medicine for OCD?

Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SRI) medications, which are typically used as antidepressants but also help to address OCD symptoms, are the types of drugs that research has shown to be most effective for treating OCD. (Note: OCD and depression can occasionally coexist, and both conditions can be managed by the same medication.)

According to studies, the following antidepressants are effective for treating OCD:

  • (Luvox®) fluoxamine
  • Sertraline (Zoloft®)
  • Citalopram (Celexa®)
  • Escitalopram (Lexapro®)

There doesn't appear to be much of a difference in how well any of the aforementioned medications function when compared to one another in studies. However, one medication may be very effective for a particular patient while the others may not. Try each medication for about three months to determine which will be the most beneficial and have the fewest side effects. Remember! It's critical to keep trying after one or two failed drug attempts. Drugs affect people very differently from one another.
