Causes

There are three types of deltoid strains

Grade 1 deltoid strain: It is characterized by tight muscles with some possible swelling. There may be mild pain when you use your shoulders for any activity.
Grade 2 deltoid strain: This strain is a result of a major injury to the deltoid muscle; there may be visible swelling and pain while carrying out activities that require movement of the shoulder. Lifting your arm to the front or the sides becomes difficult and painful.
Grade 3 deltoid strain: This form of deltoid strain is the most severe of the three; it may cause the shoulders to become immobile. You usually will experience excessive pain and severe swelling. You might not be able to move your arm and carry out any activity that requires the shoulders.
Diagnosis
The diagnosis of a deltoid strain starts with a physical exam where the doctor will understand the symptoms of the deltoid strain. 1. A crack or hairline fracture is rarely caused by a single injury. 2. The skeletal system constantly remodels itself. The cells, known as 'osteoblasts' absorb calcium and secrete bone connective tissue. If a particular site is exposed to recurrent bouts of force (which are individually not impactful enough to cause a crack), over time the osteoblasts in that region malfunction and the crack appears.

Muscular exhaustion can also cause cracks in the bone. Fractures are caused due to sudden external single force trauma to the bone. Nutritional problems like deficiencies of Calcium, Phosphorus, vitamin D and excessive smoking decrease the bone mineral density and increase the chance of both cracks and fractures.

3. Symptoms of a crack are swelling, tenderness and sharp pain in the injured region and the symptoms worsen over time. A fracture has similar symptoms and might also exhibit an external physical distortion and makes it impossible to move that part of the body that where the bone is broken.

4. An MRI is often suggested for detecting the crack or crack-prone areas because an X-ray can only detect the crack after it widens somewhat or the bone starts paining because the rays cannot pass through the tiny gap in bone material. A fracture is easily detectable by an X-ray because the rays pass right through the break.

5. Complete rest for six to eight weeks is the most effective way of healing a crack. Using a walking boot in case of cracks in the leg bones in also helpful. Cracks VS Fractures

If this does not happen, the components get loose leading to pain. Loosening of implants might be caused by excessive body weight, rigorous physical activity, and wearing of the plastic liner inserted between metal cup and ball. Also, younger patients might also have to go through a Revision Surgery when the implant completes its life expectancy.

If there is a bacterial infection in the Total Hip Replacement, Revision Surgery is employed. This is so because antibiotics cannot alone eliminate bacteria from joints. In such cases, two stages of the operations are required. But sometimes, a single stage operation is also employed. However, it has limited application.

When there is a recurrent hip location in the ball and socket joint, Revision Surgery is opted to properly align the joint and to insert the implant.

In case of a periprosthetic fracture (when bone around the implant breaks), Revision Surgery is required.

When metal used in implant breaks or degrades, it may cause damage to soft surrounding tissue and bone. This would require a corrective Revision Surgery.

Preparation for the Surgery:

The patient undergoes a thorough physical examination. It is to ensure that undergoing surgery would not be harmful in any possible way. X-Rays, MRIs, and CT scans are employed to fully understand the structure of the joint. Laboratory tests are conducted to ascertain the fitness of the patient to undergo the procedure. It should be noted that post- surgery, the patient is not able to function at all and requires help even to perform petty tasks for himself. Thus, suitable arrangements should be made accordingly in advance for the same.
