pupil is the black color circle in the brownish back portion if the eye. It controls the amount of light entering the eye. It will increase in size or dilate in darkness to 8ncrease amount of light entering eye so that u can see better. In bright light the size decreases. This is a reflex phenomena.. when a doc notices that pupil is dialled and not reacting to light- there r 2 possibilities. 1. The retina and or optic nerve is not detecting light- that is the eye can't see 2. The pupil muscle which change its size are affected. A. either the constricting muscle is not working due to nerve damage or muscle damage b. The dilator muscle is overworking and increase size of pupil. It is a sign used along with other examination findings to identify amount of injury and prognostication. also assess need of MRI or CT scan.
